You don't have to display your full name on posts if you don't want to. Here's how.

To post in this forum, you must either log in with another service like facebook or get a special account. By default, your full name is displayed when you make posts. Look at the upper right side of the dark menu bar and you'll see  your name, next to a down arrow. Click it. You can now choose to edit your profile. Give yourself a nickname, and either leave the "full name" field empty or be sure it isn't set to display your real name by looking at the check box for that field. Once you update your nickname, all  your posts will change over to using the new name.

Many of us don't especially want to have our full names out there for everyone to see. Safety first.

In addition you also have to change your GetSatisfaction URL within your profile  (you get to do it only once and it becomes permanent). If you signed up with your real name, your real name is in your profile's URL by default and shows in the address bar whenever your profile is viewed by anyone.

Old labs, do you mean that once your full name is showing up, the only way to stop that is to start a whole new getsatisfaction account? or do you mean there is ONE opportunity to go into your profile and do something to change to not your full name.  After that, then you have to get a new getsat account?

By default your profile URL will be your name if you don't want that then you have to remove your name from your profile and also change the profile URL to say match your screen name. That URL can only be changed once and then if you ever wanted your URL to say something different you would have to create a new account. Now your screen or display name you can change all you want its just your profile URL that can only be changed once.

thank you so much for explaining the details.  I had tried to change this before, but couldn't figure out why it wasn't working.  I will now hit "submit" and see if I got it right this time!
oops it still says my first and last name rather than the partial I changed it to...I will go try again.

Haha...no actually it changes them all to your new name. The name in the posts is just a place holder that actually pulls your name from your account

Why hide your name ?
If I am being honest and respectful on the Exede site, what purpose does this serve ?
Some sites I use a secondary name, but not here I want Exede to know who I am and be easy for them to look in on. PeAcE

Regardless of your name used here, ViaSat doesn't and can't tie it to your actually Exede account - this community is operated by a third party (it's actually used by HughesNet among others with the same infrastructure). That's why the moderators ask to send an email along with account and contact information. Some (including myself) prefer anonymity for a variety of good reasons while being both honest and respectful. Well, most of the time on the latter - although I don't throw the first punch I have been known to throw subsequent ones.

I would like to add the following to Old Labs response here: Exede and ViaSat are not the only ones looking at this forum.  This forum is wide open to the world, meaning that any number of hackers and scammers can come in, see everything and even get an account of their own here.  So far, I have seen 3+ instances of scammers get an account of their own on this forum and post their spam on this forum.  I'm sure that you know that the less that hackers know about you, the better off you are.

In general, I give each website that I use the minimum amount of personal information required in order to use that website and, if the website demands more personal information than I consider safe, I don't use that website.
