after getting windows 10 running, my data usage went sky high. I don't see the option of scheduling its activities during free time. It does what it wants. I just added 2 more gigabytes a couple of hours ago and it's using my air time. I'm afraid it won't stop so I can use my internet.

With its introduction a year ago, Microsoft is essentially forcing updates on Windows 10 but there are a few options for deferring them. At the same time, there are some options to minimize some of its data use. See:

This covers most of the actions that you can take.

In addition, there are some other drastic measures you can take including blocking Windows update access using firewall functionality. Glasswire has built-in firewall functionality that lets you easily block known hosts while at the same time providing data traffic monitoring that can assist in locating heavy data usage problems (https://www.glasswire.com/ and the free version suffices for most). For example, once you notice something draining your data, you can simply block it immediately.
