I think a lot of us would like to know details, but alas, it’s probably too early. I’m curious how Exede will sweeten the deals to get people to willingly upgrade (assuming costs or new contracts). I’m good with a fair upgrade, but no new contract.

I dont think they will need to sweeten the deal. Parts of the country can get nowhere close to a Gold plan today. With what the new satellite will bring to the table, people that have been stuck on Exede 5 or a Silver plan for $150/month will gladly upgrade.

But to answer the question, expecting the upgrade to be free. Whether that means a reup of a new 2 year commitment I am unsure.

Hmmm...you might be right. I bet Exede is banking on this too. I wouldn’t overestimate the willingness of people to jump on $150 plans or higher though. There will certainly be some. I jumped on one. Notice the trepidation in people’s posts currently? Not a ton of satisfaction for doubling or tripling (in my case) plan prices. I’ve been data deprived at home for 20 years or basically forever. Most others on satellite have too. We all learned to be misers. Initially, you will be right. Once those that are going to jump, sweeten it they will.

The same people that can't live without the latest iPhone will jump to Viasat 2, no matter what the cost is.  Those of us that stay on Viasat 1, will eventually see increased speeds as a result of less congestion.

Frankly, I'm extremely happy with Viasat 1 and have no plans to move to the new satellite.  Unless Exede offers me something cheaper, I play to stay on my Liberty 12 plan as long as it is available.

Expect prices to drop, at least in some areas. Keep in mind in some areas Silver is the price of Gold where Gold isn't even available. They might still charge $150, but $150 for Gold is certainly a better value than $150 for Silver.

You talk about staying with Viasat-1 and your current plan. There are some people still on Wildblue Legacy! (Of course those people might still be using rotary phones too)

Nah! I moved up to a flip phone long ago... I hear flip phones are making a come back. Consider me stylish... I've still got the rotary in a box waiting for its resurgence (or Mike and Frank from American Pickers to show up - I hope Danielle shows up instead).

For my needs now, Liberty 12 makes sense solely from a $$$ perspective. Anything better would have to be similarly priced (on NRTC it's $49.99 with no lease for me) - Bronze at $70 plus the extra $10 would have tempted me to jump ship right now - alas not available on my beam yet. ViaSat-1 has a lot of life left in her for juggling plans/pricing there.

As to the original poster's question - somehow or someway, someones got to pay for it - I'd say we will in one way another in some fashion.

I don't think we've released plans yet. Probably won't until closer to time but it will at the very least require a new modem and potential dish realignment if you do move to ViaSat 2. Keep in mind that once it's released it's not like we're going to outdate ViaSat 1. With some of the pressure off we should be able to offer the same options
