Your IP address is  not related to your physical address, but to the ground station handling your internet, which can be located in various locations around the country.

Web sites use a variety of ways to approximate your physical location. Many use commercial geo-location services (databases) which are rarely accurate for satellite internet services. Information in those databases is gathered in a number of ways - many times when you register online at a merchant site and provide a physical address which can be mapped to an ip address. Since ip addresses can change this isn't always accurate (probably reflecting someone else who had the ip address assigned before you). Visit https://www.iplocation.net/ and you can see a handful of them in action. My actual location is in Virginia and the results span from various places in Virginia (none exact) to Carlsbad, CA (not surprisingly ViaSat Corporate Headquarters is in Carlsbad, CA).

Now if you'll excuse me I have to drive to a Home depot in Salt Lake City to pickup an order... I figure that with some luck I might get there by Saturday ;)

I live in east Texas and actually had a Home Depot pick up order go to a Phoenix, AZ store when Home Depot's web site insisted that I lived in Phoenix even though I was signed on with my right address and it changed my store back to Phoenix during the order process.

T-Mobile is not much better. Of the last two sites I went to to order something while tethered to T-Mobile, one had me living a 100 miles away in one direction and the other about a 100 miles away in the other direction.

Right now Walmart's site is the worst of the one's I deal with. Even if I'm signed in and have a "My Store" picked, if I look to see if something is in stock at another local store it gives me the stores local to where it thinks I'm at, not close to the store I picked. With Exede it thinks I'm in Houston, with T-Mobile in the Waco area or vice a versa, I can't remember which for sure.

Tractor Supply comes up with a different store about every time I am on, somewhere in east Texas from almost OK to the Gulf even though I have a local store picked.

Old Labs is correct. I'm sitting in our Denver office and several geo-location sites show that I'm in Kentucky.
