Why do I get charged data for surfing the web?

I know I have a small monthly data allowance so I only use my Exede service for websurfing and occasional email.

I don't go to FB and watch videos, I don't stream, I don't YouTube.  I do research for work.

I go to my rural relaxation place and work.

However, I am being charged data for surfing the web.  Why?

My plan details state that I get unlimited web and email.

Sadly as much as that plan is true the fact is that web pages aren't just web pages any more there's all kinds of embedded flash code and java code and embedded video adds and all of that is what counts toward your monthly data usage.  If websites went back to just basic text and got rid of all the video adds and junk you could surf all data and not use data.  There is software out there that will block a lot of the videos adds on web pages.  You will just have to do a web search for them, I think one is flash block.

I visit pages for journals, Wikipedia etc.  It is all work related.

Nothing like joke video sites.

JavaScript inside of a webpage should be considered a part of the webpage and not charged for data.  There is a lot of code that is java script.  Google Analytics as an example.

I already use AdBlock Plus.  I will get a flash, shockwave, and misc video blocker.

It shows I had over 10gb of data used.  Whenever I leave I turned off the modem and my router.

My laptop doesn't do automatic updates for third party software.  WIndows Update is set to run at 4am.

If you are already using adblock I would send an email to exedelistens@viasat.com and have them go over your usage with you and see if they can help you pin point what is using your data.

Data usage has a way of sneaking up on you.  I am running Windows 10 and have been watching my usage very closely the last few weeks to avoid surprises.  I had a weather page open in one of my tabs and suddenly I observed data downloading like crazy.  The stupid weather page downloaded a 115 MB video in less than a minute while I was reading on another tab.  Curse that Exede speed!   :-)

another big killer for data would be pulling up the full res national mosaic from the NOAA.  It's a full nation wide radar loop that don't fit on my 24" full HD screen at work.
