The 'service' didn't lie to you but whatever contractor you dealt with that sold you the service. Using common sense do you think someone is going to come to your house and install expensive equipment with no contracts or cancellation fees? I don't believe in a free lunch either. If anyone tells me something too good to be true it usually is and I do some research before I agree to it. You might want to tell the people at Viasat what reseller you used and have them do some followup on it because if your being truthful in what you said it makes them look bad.
I live in a very rural area and I did research, then ordered my Exede (and DirecTV) from the company itself. Just something makes me cautious about calling the number on a sign tacked to a telephone pole that simply says "High speed internet anywhere" with a toll free number.
