Trying to cancel service

My contract date ends in two weeks.  I will be gone from my residence for nine months and I am attempting to cancel service.  Exede will not allow my to cancel prior to the day before the next billing date.  I can do that.  However, I would like Exede to send me the box for returning the modem prior to my cancellation date.  Exede refuses to do this.  Reason: policy.  The refuge of all poorly managed organizations.  The customer service representative, Nicki, could give me no other reason and her supervisor refused to speak with me.

Hello Richard, sorry to hear you’re parting with your Exede service. When you do choose to disconnect your service, we have to cancel your service same day. Unfortunately we do not have future dating available for disconnection, nor can you request return boxes for equipment prior to cancelation. There is an alternative that may be more suitable, you have the option to send the equipment yourself the “Tria and Modem” via UPS, the downside is that you have to pay for all the shipping and handling. For more information please contact Customer Care at 1-855-463-9333 and they can advise on where you can send your equipment to if this works for you.

With only two weeks to go, I would cancel today and get the return boxes sent.  You were going to send in the modem and tria anyway, right? So it just means terminating a few days early.

Nicholas -- With a few days to go, Exede told me there would be an early termination charge if I disconnected before the 10th.   I have been very pleased with the quality the internet and the data allowance.  But, in trying to work out an arrangement with Exede because I will be gone for 9 months, there has been no give. Fortunately I do have options in my area and therefore do not need Exede.  It would have been so easy for Exede to keep my business.  I have found a solution to returning the equipment.  My neighbor will pick up the box, pack it and return it to Exede. I love that Exede responded with a non answer and then said problem solved.  Solved for Exede maybe
