TIP: Saving Data with Mobile Devices

There are quite a few posts about data saving but I didn't easily find one specifically regarding mobile devices so I thought I would start a thread. Note to Exede moderators, I can definitely re-post this as a reply to an existing post if you feel it makes sense to do so.

With most people have a large number of phones and tablets on their network, they can be data hogs on your Exede plan as, by default, the device doesn't realize that your WiFi is connected to a metered internet connection. You can fix this by doing the following (I only have the instructions for Android, if someone can update for iOS that would be great):

1. Open up Settings.
2. Go to Data Usage.
3. Tap the menu on the top right and select "Network restrictions".
4. Toggle the switch to enabled on the name of your home network.

This will cause Android to treat your WiFi network like a mobile data connection and will restrict background updates and data usage. Also, the above instructions are based on stock Android and they may vary by manufacturer (please feel free to post instructions for your phone to help others out).

Feel free to reply with other mobile data saving tips!

Another thing to be aware of is that many apps can use a lot of data even when your device is not being used. A good example of this is the NPR One app which downloads content in the background when connected to WiFi (even if restricted networks is set to true). I have it installed on my tablet (which reports data usage on WiFi) and It just quietly downloaded 2 GB in the background this morning.
