I was totally misguided and given false information from Direct TV. I recently moved and subscribed to Direct TV. they told me Exede was the only internet provider in my area. Sorry, but your service sucks and I am now stuck for 2 years. No wonder there is not a 30 day trail period. I guess this is how you screw your customers. I now have 2 very angry kids who can no longer use Netflix nor watch any of their TV shows off the internet!! Highly disappointed and feel taken advantage of. Oh and the techs were HORRIBLE. Never even ensured I was connected with my devices. I was left on my own to do that... Totally dissatisfied and dread the next 2 years!!!

Hi Tammy,  I've discovered a way of streaming Netflix that saves some bandwidth.  Go into the Netflix settings:  your account,  then your profile, then playback settings.  There are three categories, low, med, and high.  I am at low and think the quality of the video is about DVD quality.  I'm fine with it and can use a third of the bandwidth for a movie, allowing me to watch three times as much for the same bandwidth.  It works well for me, hope this helps.

Thank you Susan for sharing that information! Hopefully that is helpful for Tammy as well as other customers that enjoy watching Netflix. =)

We were forced to drop Netflix due to the data caps we had with our old cellular provider. We are already Amazon Prime subscribers, so we use their video service or Vudu if we want to rent a movie via streaming. I couldn't justify the extra cost per month, and I won't let go of Amazon Prime, as the other benefits outweigh those of Netflix.

Thanks for posting the information Susan. I vaguely remembered a way to dial down the quality settings to conserve bandwidth. Amazon also offers this, but simply by marking which stream is HD and which is SD.

Hi kjboxers,  I wait until the end of my billing period,  about one week before a reset.  I check my remaining gigs and stream netflix on those last few days to use up the last of my gigs.  I check daily my usage on the exede dashboard and am getting a feel on how downloads and streaming impacts the usage and I adjust accordingly.  I'm on the classic 10 plan and am retired,  I do watch too much,  but am satisfied with the current set-up for my use.  You must check bandwidth usage daily to develop a plan to stretch out the allotment.  My netflix streaming has never had to buffer and I have not ever had to buy gigs and have not gone over my allotment. I have all updates are on manual and sync only goes on during LNFZ, with the exception of email that syncs all day.  One gig is roughly enough  for 3 netflix movies at "low" playback setting.

Susan, thank you very much for your in depth and thoughtful reply. I guess I was just being  a little facetious as I've never truly even wanted to stream netflix movies as I don't have enough time in the day to sit down and actually watch a complete movie all the way thru without interruption.. But I would love to be able to do that one day . I am just having issues basically with running out of gigs by doing normal occasional google searches and normal browsing and some Facebook posts, I can't even watch a youtube video. I've reported my issue (this is an issue that has been going on for about 3 months now first reported over 3 months ago) to tech support . They said they found an issue (JUST TODAY) with ODU (acronym for Outdoor Unit) so they are supposed to be sending a repair person. I will believe it when I see it. :-(   .. LNFZ  late night free zone?

Yes, that is late night free zone and for those of us that no longer have a hectic schedule, it is "convenient."  I've also heard that Facebook is a huge use of bandwidth, I'm not a follower of that but my daughter-in-law is.  I've heard if you are surfing Facebook and see a video but don't watch it, that video still loads in the background.  I don't think there's a way to turn that off in Facebook settings.  Many internet sites are no longer user friendly for those of us on data caps.  I'm glad they have found as issue that may help you in your data usage.  I wish they had a real time counter so we could really get a feel for our usage.  Check into youtube to see if you can lower their resolution in settings,  every little bit helps.

Susan, you can turn off the auto play function in Facebook. Go into the Settings, then Videos, and then Auto Play Videos, then select Off

Some other program’s that will cutback the Meg. eating popup videos, is FlashBlock and Adblock Plus.

There are versions for just about all browsers. You will be surprised at how many items on websites, you have to click on to make them play, after the add-ons are installed.

Just a bump to Steve’s suggestions above.

For Tammy Skrip Gola, and any others,

Someone else mentioned these program's for this same type of purpose.
PlayOn and Playlater. I was sold. I bought the membership, it's good, and can dump several movies from Netflix and many other sites during the happy hours from 12 - 5. Search here on the forum, or Google it.

Hope it helps,
Everett
