My service shows that I have used 5.3G of the 15G monthly available , in one day. We are a lightweight, older couple that use the computer for e-mails, banking and occasional shopping. My average prior to this date was 1M per day. What would cause such a large jump in my usage? At this rate we will use up our entire month in 3 days. There has been no additional equipment installed, but we did do the Apple upgrade during the off peak hours 5 days ago. What is going on?

I was thinking of switching over to Exede but to many horror stories on the use of bandwidth. I guarantee all of you if Exede didn't sell extra bandwidth, all these horror stories about going over your monthly allowance would disappear.

All this tells me is Exede is ran by a bunch of crooked people. All it would take is for every exede customer to change their banking and not pay exede for one month. Then all the crooks would go away or they would start running a legit business.

Note: I have been with starband (it's probably the slowest service out there) for over 9 yrs and never had a bandwidth problem for over usage. I use bit o meter to keep track of the bandwidth i use and it always dead on with what starband shows.

Crooks you just lost a customer.

PT Reaves - If you have successfully monitored and controlled your usage for 9 years with starband, I would expect you to have the same success with Exede.  I have been with WildBlue/Exede since 2005 and have never had an overage and what independent measurements I have made, their metering was right on.  Yes it takes some attention to detail to plug the background processing leaks due to "cloud services" and the like, and no you can't watch a lot of videos during the metered hours.  There are "horror" stories here, because this is where people come to complain and reach out for help.  The other ~99.97% of WildBlue/Exede customers are online doing other things.

Patricia - If you just upgraded you Apple OS to 10.9, my understanding is that that upgrade is just over 5 Gigabytes.  You can check with one of the Exede folks here to see if that upgrade was registered during the LNFZ or not.  You can also ask them for a 5 GB bonus during the Great Gig Giveaway,

My macs just updated alone with the iPhones and apps, burned though the 15 g in 2 days with no movies or downloads. I have started turning off anything to do with iCloud and photo stream and iCloud drives. I think the secret is to stay away for any "cloud" storage or syncing. I also have the philips Hue lights and I think they talk to the cloud.

Thanks for all the tips and comments guys. (: If you can send me an email Patricia, I can go over your data traffic with you to see what caused this usage. The email is exedelistens@viasat.com. Thanks so much.

Unlike yourself I have had satellite for a very long time.  Where I live there is no cable, no DSL, no cell connections of any sort, so satellite is the only way to go.  I have been on Direct TV since it started, and Wildblue since they began in Colorado, may to many years ago to remember.  We also have Macs (4 of them), does not mean I know how to use them well.  So, my problems persists without resolution, which is frustrating.  I will try to contact Wildblue today, but I suspect that they will be of no help at all, and that will only make things worse because I will have run out of this months allocation tomorrow.  Only to be followed by leaving Wildblue and going somewhere else.  I don't think that either option is correct, but I suspect that is where I am going to end up anyway.

Hi patricia,  I also have apple and found out that I need to make all updates on manual .  Go to system preferences, select the app store, then I make sure all automatic activities are unchecked.  Periodically I open the app store and check for updates, it will tell me if any are available and ask me  if I want to download.  I usually wait for the LNFZ.  Hope this helps.

Thanks a bundel, I had forgotten about that and I am an Apple Mac & IOS beta tester.
I also ordered out an old Linksys router so I can block everything put email and normal web browsing ports. I am going to set it to open all the ports during the free time at night.

Now all I need to do is wait for some updates. I want to try and make the automate program check for updates during the LNFZ and apply them, and do the same for the iTunes downloads. Also as a side note for those that have multiple macs and iPads and iPhones, you can get the server app and set up the caching server (just a couple of clicks) and it will capture all the mac and IOS programs and updates to a local hard drive. The big deal is when one mac gets the update from the app store via satellite then second mac will get it from your server. The same goes with multiple iPads and iPhones as long as they are the same model.
