Purchased a smart tv. The plan is to download movies ( Netflix now allows on mobile devices so you can watch on plane etc) and mirror to smart TV. My question is will this use wifi ( considered as streaming vs.my unlimited plan of web surfing and email)?

Netflix movies are not downloaded, they are streamed. If you are watching on either device using your Exede WiFi, I believe data will be consumed.

Hi gm,

You are mostly correct about Netflix movies being streamed, but there is a relatively new feature that allows you to download actual files to a mobile device to watch on the Netflix mobile app later without an internet connection. Here's more information

It's important to note, though, that this feature still uses up data, either with your cell phone company or your internet company, depending which your phone is connected to.

Hi Nichole,

My understanding is that downloading the movie to your device WILL consume Exede data (assuming you connect your phone to Exede rather than using your cell phone company's data plan), but mirroring it from your device to your TV should not. But you may run into low picture quality or other issues doing it this way, since the smaller movie file that goes on your phone will probably not look perfect blown up on a big TV. But I could be wrong about that last part -- perhaps someone else on this forum has tried it?

If you decide to proceed, my advice would be to keep a close eye on your smart TV settings. Besides video streaming, many smart TVs have features that can use up your Exede data even when you aren't watching. If your data starts going missing, you might consider disconnecting your smart TV from the internet when you aren't actively using it.

Let us know how it turns out!

RE: "Good luck getting...video to stream with this service!"

In dialup days, with the pilgrims onboard, it was "good luck getting web pages to load" during primetime.  It was better to surf, and download, after midnight, back then.

Thank you for all your posts.  I have found out the answer to this question that I wanted to share.

You CAN stream with Excede!!!  Here is how:

- Purchase an Apple TV if you have an apple product.
- Netflix gives you the opportunity with many movies and shows to download on your mobile device.  They last for a number of days on your device then will expire.
- I have the unlimited email and web browsing plan with 10 GB of data.  Free time is between 3am-8am
- In the morning before 8am I download what I want to watch that evening
In the evening when I want to watch the program I simply unplug my router from excede modem.  This creates an intranet vs using the internet.
- I then airplay thru mobile device and apple TV thru the intranet, this does not use data as your not connected to exede.  Your mobile device is mirrored to the TV and BAM you are streaming!

Used it last night and worked perfect!

My husband has a Samsung phone and we are going to try the same thing but thru our LG smart TV tonight.  It should essentially work the same way but I'll let you know.
