exede is awful. You get charged $60 a month and cannot use it to watch movies, videos and almost don't have enough to get email or check facebook or accounts. I am sick of the charges that are no good to me

Seriously I pay over $120 a month and I need it for work. I have begged them to offer more like a business plan for telecommuters and they refuse. I'm going to call other companies and see if they offer business plans

And as described around the end of this thread:

https://community.exede.com/exede/topics/anyone-have-a-theory-as-to-why-some-customers-have-big-prob...

The best choice for Windows users is:

Check for updates but let me choose whether to install them

Preferably during LNFZ or the end of your monthly cycle when feeling flush with excess data to burn...

And welcome to Patch Tuesday where you'll find the latest round of Windows updates eagerly consuming your data - if you've chosen poorly  ;)

But it's not too bad this month assuming you were previously up to date.

Based upon what I learned in that thread, I've changed my update setting to "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install." Right now I have 21 updates for a total of 130MB awaiting install.

Do that four times a month and there goes half a GB.

Unfortunately, "Patch Tuesday" can unveil any number of updates taking up to ridiculous amounts of your download capacity. This is especially true when Microsoft Office service packs come out.

Hello Peggy, I am a huge fan and user of Netflix so I totally understand the want to be able to use it to the full. Have you been able to take advantage of our Great Gig Giveaway promotion? Getting a few GB added to your account each month will allow you some breathing room to watch a few movies. (:

RickyP033 this is exactly what I'm talking about! There are so many companies that are too interested in gaining new customers than keeping loyal ones. But unfortunate for them this is usually the ultimate downfall for the corporation. Unfortunate for us we have to ride it out until that day comes.

RickyP033, if the Freedom plan is available in your area then you should be able to switch to it now. If you can send me your info, I can check into this to be sure. Shonda, please send your info to exedelistens@viasat.com and I will check your eligibility to upgrade. Thank you.

They don't have the big giveaway program available in all areas of the country. We just have to put up with it because have nothing else available in our area.

Hang in there Joyce, once the new satellite is launched next spring, and gets commissioned by mid summer, there should be several nice offerings for us.

I will be looking forward to that Christine.  I live in the mountains of NC so we have little options here.   They keep talking about laying down fiber optics so we can have fast DSL here but I have lived her for 14 years and heard that same promise many times without any action so I'm not holding my breath!  Thanks for the information about the new satellite launch this spring.

I just moved to Exede from a Verizon hotspot plan, which cost me $90 a month for 20GB of usage. I am extremely careful about how I use my data. This is done through disabling automatic software update downloads, and disabling data sync features on my devices. Since I am in graduate school, I use a lot of data just to access materials online. Nearly every month, we would use every bit of bandwidth. How we did this in our family was monitor usage and during the last few days, we would see if we had enough space to stream movies. Bear in mind that these services use a lot of data. Streaming a 1080p movie from Netflix takes up to 4.7GB per hour! That's how data gets used up so quickly.

Exede is not designed for extremely high levels of data usage. It is for people who live outside city limits and need connectivity. It is not for gamers, nor is it for telecommuters or professionals who rely on VPN connectivity to their workplace. This is abundantly clear on their web site. Unfortunately, there are drawbacks when cable and DSL are not an option.

You've got to do all the things jimpryde described.

I telework as well. My company requires a VPN. Every VPN is a bandwidth hog because it's always exchanging data with the server. It's mostly "Are you still connected?", Yes, I'm still connected!" I don't stay connected to the VPN. I engage it hen I need to exchange data and then disconnect.

Don't leave email clients open. They're constantly exchanging data with the email server. It's mostly, "Got mail for me?" "Nope, not right now. Ask again in 30 seconds." "OK, I'll ask again in 30 seconds."

Each exchange eats bandwidth.

During the day, I toggle off my laptop's wireless when I'm not using it and toggle it back on when I want to check for email or navigate to a web page and when I'm done I turn it off. I turn it off if I walk away from it.

why don't they just offer more for our bucks. We should not have to watch everything we do when we are paying for the service.

I guess you just don't understand the nature of business.

I paid more than $16K for my car. You'd think for that amount of money they'd give me the features of a car that costs $32K? Or, for that matter, why couldn't they give me Bentley?

I should not have to drive a KIA when they could give me more for my bucks?

It just doesn't make sense.

Peggy,

The amount that can be offered is limited by the satellite's capacity. See:

https://community.exede.com/exede/topics/new-exede-customers-they-have-great-prices-on-there-package...

for a fuller explanation, albeit a slightly different question.

Thanks for posting about lowering the speed on Netflix and for posting how much is used per hour....I've found that it can use up to 7GB per hour at times, don't know why the variance. It could be their inaccurate metering ( the note says this could be 24 hours behind ). Needs to be an ON-Board real-time meter.

Anyone on this thread have trouble with Jerky streaming videos?. Having 12Mbs speed is not all you need to watch a video. Ping, Latency and Jitter are important too. Possibly should/could effect VOIP too.

RickyP033,   I stream from netflix at the lowest resolution in their settings, but have no buffering or irregular video streaming.  I am using a router (apple airport extreme)  with 802.11ac and am streaming to an apple tv that also uses 802.11ac.  I use some voip service on my cell phone and before I upgraded my router (last year), I had some breaking and disconnect.  Also had some buffering hesitations.  I no longer have that, calls are clear,  only dealing with latency on voip,  can't be avoided.  If you stream via router, that may be some of the problem if the router can only handle the slower speeds.  Don't know if your situation could improve with what worked for me.  FYI, my ping goes from 650 ms to 800.

I am also in a situation where I'm on the "Freedom" plan but STILL run out of data (after which they "throttle" - slow things down even more).

Worse, I've in these last few days, their usage counters are about 10x too high - they even showed use using multiple GB's when we weren't home!

Anyone else seeing this?

These people should be sewed for false claims. I was told it would never slow down between 1 and 5 gigs. Should have run the installers off when they said they were affiliated with wild blue.
