Opera Max and Data Savings

For those of you using Android devices on Exede and hit issues with data consumption due to streaming media, do you mind trying the app called Opera Max and giving me feedback here? This app will allow you to selectively throttle individual apps (Netflix, Youtube, Pandora, etc...) so that the quality will be lowered to save data. Often times the quality degradation is not very noticeable, and it may help save a significant amount of data. I'm interested in seeing what kind of savings you're seeing across different apps, and whether you noticed any quality issues. Things like buffering or a video not being watchable are issues to look for. I've attached a couple of screenshots showing where you can change the quality in the opera max settings to experiment. As you change the settings, you'll notice the percentage of settings may change. As you can see in the screenshots below, by setting the video streaming quality to low (which still may be acceptable), I was able to save almost 50% of my data usage.

Thanks!

That's pretty cool Cliff. As an Exede employee we can't officially recommend or endorse any 3rd party apps but if it's working for you it'll be interesting to see if this works the same with other users.

Onavo Exrend does the same thing on iPhones. I use it on mine and it works as it claims. Here's the link if others are interested. Works on iPad and iPod too.

As far as I know, Onavo does not do streaming video savings, but only websites and pictures. Have you tried with Netflix to see if it works?

I don't use netflix so can't say on that but, it does reduce data usage and any reduction is good if you're using your Exede connection.
