when trying to access my account I get (we have changed our customer portal all users are required to create a new user name and password). is this for real?

I am pretty sure this is a scam or phisher trying to get your personal information.

I checked my account this morning and everything was normal, no messages like that.

Yeah, make sure you enter the YRL http://account.viasat.com/.  You'll be redirected to a https://mysso.exede.net/ URL afterward.
