That is correct, the surfbeam2 modem that the installers hook up is the only modem you can use for exede service.  It is configured to read their satellite signal and match the power requirements for their TRIA.

Can I ask what the issue is your having or why your asking about the modem?

I was hoping to purchase my own modem and save the 10 a month lease fee.

Only ones that have a purchase option is HughesNet and that is a recent change on their side as well because they never used to have that when I was with them that I remember.

And those of us who've subscribed to Exede through NRTC - they have a purchase option but in my case my NRTC member organization only offers the purchase option - but we NRTC users are special snowflakes ;)

Also on the same subject.  We got this service through direct tv. They called it a bundled service and claimed we would be able to watch 10,000 movies on demand. So why does the modem not have two outputs so we can actually watch movies on demand as advertised?

You can select from 10,000 movies on demand. You will not be able to watch more than 3 or 4 a month because of data restrictions. If you want to connect more than one device to the modem, you will have to have a wireless router, not supplied by Directv or Exede.

I understand that now.  I SHOULD have been informed before i signed up!! Direct tv is using deceptive and misleading advertising to get customers to sign up for services they can't use!!

I know and sadly that is the world we live in is they walk a fine line.  Technically they didnt say anything untrue, you do have access to those movies on demand and you can watch them with exede internet...now comes the gray line, being that satellite has a limited data plan it will consume lots of data to watch those movies.

Except they made us believe we would have movies on demand the day we got internet. There is no grey line at all.  They lied!!

Hello Joe, Exede customer service provided you the correct information based . Our modems are the only ones compatible to provide service and retrieve signal; no other modem will get you service through Exede.

For new customers they have come back out with the Prepaid Lifetime Lease.  You pay $299 upfront in addition to any other activation fees, one time, and you will never have to pay the lease fee again.  I am suggesting they come up with a plan for long time customers to offer a lease buy out.  Only draw back, you are responsible for any failed equipment.  However, they are also working on a service plan to be revealed hopefully soon.
