How slow can this service get

This company should be mandated to limit the customer base to the number it can actually support.  Sunday evening and speed is 970kb/s.  Called to complain yesterday, I was told it was due to high traffic.  I asked when if high traffic........5pm to about 2am  When most people want to use the internet for personal reasons.  It if false advertising the speeds Excede publishes of 12Mbs and 25Mbs.  You can't ever get them in a time when you want to use it.   Maybe its time for all of us to start also complaining to the Better Business Bureau

What plan are you on and how much data have you used so far this month?

I'm on a Liberty 12 plan. I have used all 12 GB of my priority data and my current speed is 860k.

For the service plan I am on, 860k is perfectly acceptable during prime time after all of my priority data has been used. Usually my speeds are closer to 256k during prime time.

During weekdays the Liberty Pass gives me speeds up to 5 mbps during the day. Once again, that is exactly what I signed up for and get. It's normal for the plan I am on.

Letting us know what plan you are on and how much data you have used will help us determine if this is normal for you or not.

If you are on an unlimited plan and have used less than 150 GB for the month, your speeds should be over 1 mbps during prime time.

That speed is what I get on my beam during Primetime, even on priority data. Doesn't effect me.

People are way, way too occupied with the speed they are getting.

I'm always amazed at the people who know exactly what speeds they are getting at all times of the day.  The only time I check my speeds is if something on this forum makes me do it.  I normally check my speed by watching Netflix and if it gets a little fuzzy, I say " speeds must be down a bit" and then I keep on watching Netflix ( Black Mirror.)    :)

Netflix the End of the F###ing World is good too if you are a Tarantino fan.

Those Brits sure can make some good series!

I have the 25 gb liberty plan. I understand that when I am over the 25 g they slow it down. My problem is they say it will only slow to around 1-5 mb and when I ran a speed check it was downloading at .26 mb?? and that was at two inthe morning. Tell me how that is right??!?!  Not 2-6mb but POINT 26 less than one mb!

All depends on your beam. Another poster on this forum says he gets decent speed on Liberty Pass.

Location, location, location. Internet performance is highly dependant on that.

Yep. All depends if you are on a congested beam or not.

Viasat advertises that you should get 1 to 5 mbps during the day. It isn't a guarantee and is subject to congestion.

I've been extremely lucky to be on a good beam.

It's too much like building a new freeway in Los Angeles.  How do you accurately predict what the traffic will be?  Things may go along fine and then a holiday shows up, or millions of people suddenly decide this is a shorter commute...  It's not easy.

Viasat built the Viasat-1 satellite and actually anticipated service to 2 million people with it.  Then the traffic began to change.  People now had more ways to drain data; videos, Windows 10 updates and sneaky distribution of those updates using customers computers to do it. Things changed and now that 2 million-rated satellite is struggling with 650,000.  Viasat didn't change, we the populace changed.  Viasat responded, they designed, built, and launched another satellite, twice as big and any day now it will become operational.  Viasat sees a trend and presently is building the first 2 of 3 terabit satellites to be completed, launched, and operational in just 2 years from now.  They see the problems and are proactively doing something about it.  They are not busy in some darkened room someplace counting their money.

Too much work is being done to take time out for that.

I'm on beam 318, and when I was on one of the Liberty Pass plans (25 MB, if i recall correctly), I had decent enough speeds when I had exceeded my priority data and was on Liberty Pass. I'd check my speeds just for grins and giggles, and found that a majority of the time, we were within the 1-5 mb/s. Other times, we got well over 5 mb/s (I remember a couple of times being pretty impressed with 10 mb/s). And then, there were a few times when speeds were pretty non-existent (below 1 mb/s).

I'm on the Silver plan now, and there are times we enjoy close to 25 mb/s during non-peak hours. On the average, though, non-peak gets us anywhere from 10 - 20 mb/s, and peak hours are typically lower, but not terrible. Certainly nothing that would render our internet unusable.

(I like to watch YouTube videos and stream the occasional show or movie to my PC or TV.)
