We have 10GB of activity. We had problems before with our amount of usage. We were told before that our problem is streaming data. We password protected our router, don't download movies, don't look at Youtube, etc. That worked for awhile, but now we use our 10GB in about 10 days and then have to live with an excruciatingly slow Internet. The only thing we use that could possibly be using a lot of data is Facebook. The only way we can prevent using 10GB per month is not to use the Internet.

Nancy, I can see why you are frustrated and why you feel like there is no way to get your usage down further. However, I can tell you that I have the same 10gb limit you have and I never go over that limit---in fact at the end of my month, I have a few gb's left over. With all of the ways that you data could be being used without your being aware, I think it is possible that that may be going on.
I am constantly online, checking and writing/sending emails, surfing various websites, doing searches about a lot of things and visiting my favorite websites.  I only use facebook a little, but one way I have heard of fixing too much data usage on facebook has something to do with setting about videos starting automatically I think--can someone talk about that here?  I do know that one thing that helps keep my usage down is that I use flashblock and some other settings on my browser to keep videos from automatically playing just because I go to a website.  Do you think such auto-starts might have anything to do with your problem?  You may be aware of a lot of the other things that can quietly eat up your data, like downloads/updates going on the background which you may not even see?
I did even find a way I could watch steamed media/movies/tv shows etc, which was by getting a third party program at www.playlater.tv.  which allows me to record streamed media overnight during the 12 midnight to 5 a.m. free zone, and then what is recorded is on my hard drive and I can watch it when I want without using up data from my allowance.
Also I heard on this site that there are certain things about the way Windows 8 works that can use up data unless you change the settings in some way. (wish I knew the details but others on this forum have talked about it).

I agree... Video on Demand on your Satellite TV uses up your data very quickly. If there is something I want to see, I wait until after midnight to download it and choose "Watch Later" on the TV screen. And stopping videos from playing automatically on Facebook cuts down usage, too. I saw the comment about a way to stop any video from playing automatically on any website... gotta get that. Not only because they eat up data, but they are just annoying!

Download Firefox browser. In the settings disable adobe flash player. Download it if it isn't there. This will cause each web page you visit to ask if you want to enable flash player. And ask weather you want to keep it enabled or use it just once. The latter is what I always do so if I want to watch a news video I can but all the advertisements can't just play on there own, you have to give them permission. Also check to see if your router has an guest network. This will be separate from your password protected network. If it is enabled your neighbors might be using all your data. Also if you have satellite TV unhook your broadband from it, this will use your data also. You won't be able to watch on demand movies or use pay for view. If none of this works you need to contact exceede customer service because the problem may be on there end. Hope this helps!

P.S. I am using a Netgear N 600 wireless router they have a webpage just for your router settings. This is where I disabled my guest network.

Thomas I agree this works, but you can also do this on Chrome and other browsers, not just on firefox.  Here is a link to an article about how to disable video autoplay on a number of popular browsers:  http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news/how-to-stop-annoying-internet-videos-from-autoplaying-082514.htm...

and I found a link on how to disable auto video play on facebook as well:

Nancy you are not alone it is a ongoing problem with this company.  They tell you they will look into it and that you have to be patient and wait while they check things. Problem is you get a run around and all the while your still paying the same for a service your not getting.
