Data discrepancy

I log my account activity so that I know EXACTLY how much data I use, but recently Exede register more data usage than I had used. Exede has not responded with the numbers I requested so that we could isolate exactly when the overage happened. Instead, I have only received lame standard-response type emails without addressing any of my questions.

Either some hacker is out there stealing data (and Exede is oblivious to it), or Exede is purposefully overcharging data to increase profits. Either way, they are not forthcoming with the data requested to justify their totals.

This is the opposite of good service.

Been experiencing this since January. Still no solution from Exede. Frustrating!

Hard to pin down. Facebook auto videos suck it up, radar animation, downloads from programs on your phone and computer. You can call them direct and have them check your usage. You can even tell you the period of time it was at its greatest.

Jim W - Wonder how you are logging your account activity?

All traffic goes through my access point (Linksys WRT54G). I am running Tomato firmware which allows logging of all traffic.

Are you using any type of NET Monitoring software via SNMP through your router?  I am always going over for the last several months an I'm trying to isolate if it's correct or if it's something automatically updating on one of my devices.

I just have the AP log totals (up and down are listed separately) to NVRAM for each day. I use the web interface to look at the log. Every few days I compare what Exede things I've used with what I've logged. Most of the time they agree good enough, but recently they were 1.8 GB over what I had logged over a 4 day period.

Look at 192.168.100.1

Under the " Ethernet Interface Statistics" you'll see the absolute data up and down figures for your modem.   Might be helpful.
What shows is total bytes since the last monthly reset.

The Liberty plans works. Your only setback will be no more heavy downloading at 2am. My average speeds after the 12gb are gone, clocks around 350kbs. Thats enough to stream any movie. At least you'll be in a position to say: 'goodnight' to those late night download parties.

I'll be switching to the Liberty plan later today once I've finished using up my data. Thanks for the input.

I have two ideas on how my AP can not agree with Exede numbers.

1) The house operates on a local subnet, which the internet doesn't see. This creates a firewall due to address translation that is required for someone on the outside to reach a PC on the subnet. The sat modem has a completely different ip than the local subnet, which CAN be seen by the internet. Data can be directed towards the sat modem ip, but will not get routed to any of the machines on the subnet. In this scenario the sat modem will see the inbound traffic, but my access point will not. The sat company will charge for the traffic even if it cannot be routed to any of my machines.

2) Due to the crippling effect of such large latency, Exede will acknowledge receipt of a packet before I even get it. This allows the data to keep streaming without waiting for a response from a machine on my end. But, what happens if I cancel a download? The data can potentially keep streaming (see #1 above) even though I "think" I've canceled it.

Any other ideas on how the sat modem can see traffic that isn't routed to any computer on my subnet?

In the more than 3 years I have been on Exede, my ASUS router has always reported internet data usage at or slightly above that number being reported on the Exede meter. I have never had any data usage that I cannot account for. Microsoft updates are usually my big data hogs.

I just had an event highlighting a problem with Exede and data counting. I lost internet access, so I connected to the Viasat modem to check status. Sure enough, "disconnected". However, the transmit and receive bytes and packets were still ticking higher. I cycled power to the sat modem, which didn't appear to help. After about 15 minutes, and over 1MB up & 1MB down, the internet finally came back. I'm almost certain that Exede is counting those bytes, even if they didn't actually go anywhere.

I have tried to restrict my devices from automatically downloading and automatically running videos but it seems the advent of bandwidth-sucking web-sites, apps, and devices are outpacing Exede's ability to deliver cost-effective and practical data plans.  I just switched to Liberty 12 and within 17 days exceeded my data limit and have been throttled so severely in the evenings that i can't send emails, can't access webpages, and can't even access my exede account to purchase more data.  I am completely annoyed by this when my counterparts in the city blow through terrabytes of data for a fraction of what it would cost me.  I totally get this is satellite - but COME ON!!  I'm not a gamer.  I don't stream Netflix movies but do watch the occasional YouTube and Facebook videos.  Last year, I could make 12 GB last 30 days - now it seems the GB's flow through 2 times faster and I know my viewing habits haven't changed - if anything I've become more self-restrictive...  As Jon Stewart so wisely advised us.... "if you smell something, SAY something."  Well, I'll tell you what; this stinks!

This is why I fear Windows 10 some. Heard it is harder to schedule download times and that it downloads quite often. Not good if you are on limited data.

I am very happy with my Windows 7 on all my computers, and after seeing the many problems that Window 10 is having, I have no desire to upgrade to W 10. We on limited data just can't put up with adding more data hogs to our home networks.

Hopefully they will work it out, most of my unlimited data friends seem to like it.

I have the same problem. I use SurplusMeter on my Mac that tallies all ethernet usage including usage that stays within my WiFi network. I am constantly running 100MB per day behind what Exede says I use. Recently, I have been unplugging the ethernet cable from the modem when I am not on line or I put my machine to sleep. This seems to help stop the bleed. As an unintentional experiment, I forgot to unplug the ethernet from the modem last night and I have a 100MB shortage again this morning. This includes 5 hours of free time. Try unplugging from the Excede modem and let us know if this helps the data bleed.

I used to compare my Exede usage every day with my computer/phone totals and never saw a discrepancy larger than 10MB and it was as likely to be in my favor as it was to be against me.  I now only spot check when I see a large data spike.  I use SRT to log Exede usage to a file and then BitMeter 2 on all my computers to log computer usage.  Now with Windows 10, I can use their built in data history to see how much each program on the computer has used.

My totals also usually agree with Exede. However, this event indicated an issue, so I asked for Exede's daily totals. They FINALLY sent me my daily totals for the 4 days of interest. The disagreement happened on just one day, but the difference was about 2GB! I log all daily traffic, except Exede phone service (VOIP), which isn't supposed to count. This has been a very rare event for me, but I find that Exede does not have any details about the traffic. Also, Exede is always right and the customer is always wrong, even if they have not details. Exede assumes ALL of there customers know nothing about computers or network traffic, and Exede's software (& hardware) are perfect. It's just been very frustrating.

I have now switched to the Liberty plan, but ended up without internet for about 12 hours. I am not sure if the two are related, but the timing is suspicious. Oh, I forgot, Exede's system is perfect, so somehow it's my fault.

I will give credit to Exede for coming up with the Liberty Plans. If a company knows (but will not admit) that their data counting is flawed, then something like the Liberty Plans  make the most sense.

Dave - I received a batch of Office 2010 updates after installing Windows 10, but only 4 small Win 10 updates in the first three weeks.   My "main" computer is on Ethernet while I have four others on WiFi set as metered connections, so if there is a big update, I won't get burned too badly (hopefully).  The ones on WiFi I can let update during the LNFZ or maybe even install their updates from my Ethernet computer, assuming that the peer-to-peer updating actually works.

Checked again this morning, unplugging the ethernet from the modem has stopped the data bleed. The network comes up immediately when you plug back in. It is also a good way to stop those unwanted upgrade downloads. Has anybody gotten any money back from Microsoft or Apple for the cost of their automatic downloads?  I wish I could switch to Liberty. Not available in my area, so I am stuck with the creative data calculations from Exede for the next two years unless they put up another satellite.
