Data Usage

Yesterday was cool and rainy so I stayed inside and about noon I watched some 4K videos and then streamed a movie and from 3 to 8 pm I streamed music and at 8, streamed another movie.  Today I checked out my usage and Exede showed for that time period that about 90% was used for web browsing and about 5% for audio, video.  Just about opposite from what I actually used.  What's up with that?

I wouldn't get too wrapped up in the mix of data and the fact that the distribution isn't what you expected. I don't know how Exede determines what category your web activity fits into at any given time. Although you might think a certain activity should be categorized one way, Exede's operations might categorize it differently.

I would actually prefer they keep the minimum data about my web activities, Just what they require to conduct their business and to provide my connection.

To me it's more about privacy concerns.

Dan,
It's a matter of setting the Routers LAN IP to something that does not conflict with the Exede modems's IP

Steve, which ASUS router do you have? I would LOVE to have a router that shows data usage by device. The Netgear only shows total data, no breakdown.

Brian,I would, he has every right to question it and that seems to be exede's problem is they do not want anyone asking to many questions

Andy, I currently have the ASUS RTAC1900P router. While I am very happy with it, if it failed, I would move up to the RT-AC3100.

I use the Merlin software with the router, it has a few improvements to the ASUS software that give even better traffic monitoring software.

It could also be the source of the videos and media. Sometimes it falls under "Other video" if it's not Youtube, DirecTV VOD, Hulu or Netflix.  But I think there's definitely been cases embedded video on websites may be in the webbrowsing category.

Amazon would be web browsing, TV apps depend on where the app goes. I often see less common video content shown as web browsing. Amazon is, first a shopping site, that's browsing, it happens to have videos for it's Prime members to stream but, that's a browsing type site.

YouTube should be video, but you do have some video usage shown.

Thanks Bev, I guess this makes sense.  Not so much what you are watching or hearing but more like what web site it is coming from.

Anita, if you send an email with your account and contact information to exedelistens@viasat.com and , request a usage review, they will be able to give you a better idea of where your data is being used.
