Well this is the 11th consecutive month of making it less than 2 weeks into our cycle and hitting the 70% mark, the good news is we will be on vacation all next week so we will experience the joy of real internet for a week without worrying about monitoring our data usage 24-7, bad news is we come back to unusable Excede service.  The other good news is I believe we are close to being able to disconnect this nightmare, at which time I plan to buy a couple of pounds of tannerite to destroy my Excede satellite.  I'm 37 years old and I have NEVER experienced a scam of this magnitude, this "service" is in no way acceptable for an active family of 4.

First what package do you have? Second what do you do online during the day (from 5AM to Midnight)? Thirs if you have a router is it undiscoverable and secure so that no one could use it unless you told them the Wi-Fi network name and, gave them the password? Fourth, are you monitoring usage and insuring no one is streaming any thing during the day, all updated for all programs are done at night and, that adds, flash, shockwave, quickTime are all blocked on all devices?

I've been through your drill a dozen times, the fact remains that no matter what an average family of 4 does(short of not using the internet, ever), you cannot stay withing the extremely limited data cap of 10MB. We use smart phones, we pay bills, we use social media in what I would consider to be an average way.  Excede offers VERY limited tools(the bar graph usage meter is a joke) to monitor your usage, and offers a multitude of excuses and diversional tactics when this topic is brought up. It is obvious to me that the company is aware of the extreme limitations of this service, it was evidenced by the questions on a recent survey sent to me by Excede, what they plan to do about it remains to be seen.  I'll continue offering this suggestion........I do NOT NEED THE SPEED, speed is completely pointless with the extremely low data caps, you cant stream anything to any extent anyway so the speed is just unnecessary.  But my speed by 3/4, IE down to 2MB instead of 10MB, then double my data usage limit.

We've suffered almost the same experience with periodic down service and excessive data usage...and we are a family of two with far less than average usage on 10MB, i.e., email, limited internet surfing and NO gaming.  Latest is we are being told it may be a faulty modem reporting incorrect data usage figures.  Modem hopefully to be replaced this weekend....we'll see.  We live in the country with no access to cable or clear access line to alternative Wi-Fi...so no real options to WildBlue/Exede.  Any suggestions?

If it fixes your problem I will be shocked, just search this forum and you will see what I mean.  We also have no alternatives, but I'll be honest having no internet at all is a better alternative than this service.  It is sooooooo limiting, not to mention expensive for what you get.  I think we will cancel and not have internet as soon as our contract(what we were lied to by the tech and sales rep to get into), is up.

Justin,
Wow, It sounds like you've been having issues with your data usage for almost a year now. I will be glad to take a look at your account and discuss your usage information. I can help figure out what is causing you to go over your data limit every month. We also have tips on how to maximize your data, examples of activities that will cause you to go over your data, tips on using Netflix and Youtube, and a lot of other valuable information that may help you manage your monthly allowance. If you would like to discuss this further, please send an email to exedelistens@viasat.com and I will be more than happy to assist you. Thanks.

Crystal, thank you for offering to assist, I understand what uses data perfectly....normal internet usage uses data.  I believe that I was unclear making my point.  The point is that this service is simply not acceptable for an average family who each have  a smart phone, use the internet daily on a PC/Tablet, and the thing is our kids go to school during the day and we work full time!!  We do not stream Netflix, and only watch the occasional YouTube video...again what i would call an average/normal family usage and we can't make it 2 weeks without being throttled.  Lets be clear about another thing, once you are throttled this service becomes pretty much useless, it is slower than dialup(I was told it would be at least 512K when it was sold to me).  Additionally if you are going to sell additional data, don't completely gouge your customers at $10 for each additional unit of data, the service is already exceedingly expensive don't take advantage of your customers even more when they are desperate for data.

Justin, We all have to make choices. If you choose to live where satellite internet is all that is available, you also have to choose to become less dependent on the internet. Don't blame others for your not doing your homework before diving into satellite internet.

I talked to multiple excede reps, their technician, and sales people all of whom led me to believe this "service" would work just fine for us...they flat out lied in that regard. So before you go to lecturing hear the whole story!

Also a family of 4.  two adults going to college online and two teenage boys.  WE are always out of data by the 20th of the month and we pay for 15gb.  Something is wrong when we have to pay 2-3 times more for internet than people who are in an area that can receive better services through high speed internet.  1/2 a mile down the road we would have been set.  Very frustrating for 2014.  Seems like price gouging.  I wonder if a lawyer ever looked at the options and tried to fight it.

People who live in town have a few things going toward lower internet prices than we country folks do.

1. They don't have to rely on a satellite that need a rocket (with lots of rocket fuel) to be usable in the first place. Said satellite also is VERY expensive to build or have built for you.

2. The DSL and Cable systems can handle a lot more customers that a satellite can before they have to add more to the system and, even then they can add capacity without having to build (or have built) a satellite and launching it into space.

3. They do not need specialized modems. You can get a cable/DSL modem at Wal Mart but, try that with a satellite modem.

4. they do not have to distribute satellite dishes to every customer, or any equipment really.

It cost them much less to provide service and, they have the capacity for a larger customer base. We have a service that is costly to provide with a smaller customer base.

There are some great 3rd party apps for monitoring data usage.

I would agree that 10 GB is not enough for a family of four however, Excede and Wildblue both offer higher limit packages.

We are heavy internet users, work and personal use (mostly personal but I do need internet for an average of 100 MB per day to upload documents for work purposes.) We have 2 computers, 1 all in one printer, 1 iPad and 2 cell phones that we allow to use our WiFi via the router. We average about 20-22 GB per month usage.

Now the 10 GB would be fine IF we did not want to view any videos at all, did not upload or download anything except text only emails, did not use it to update or get new apps on our mobile devices, did not visit sites with a lot of graphics or photos and, did not play any online games except in the LNFZ but, we choose not to restrict ourselves that much so we need more data.

I know it's a bit costly for most families but, it's the price we pay to have our rural lives and all of the rest about living out here we enjoy. 150 (will go to 160 after the into on Excede Voice) for phone and internet, 150 for DTV, 160 for cell phone service, 20 for Sirius/XM radio.) and that's all just connectivity stuff, still have electric, fuel for vehicles, food, supplies for us and our animals and, any maint or repair costs on all of it to allow for. Country live can be costly if you want all the comforts of the city out here.
