Ask Viasat (almost) Anything: Introducing Forum FAQs!

Submissions for ForumFAQs are now open!

Do you have a question for Viasat, big or small? Do you think lots of other people might have the same question? Here’s your chance to ask away.

We’re launching a new feature called Forum FAQs. Here’s how it works:

1.    Post your questions to this thread. It will be open until 11 am PST October 31st

2.    After the submission period closes, we’ll review the questions and pick those that we think will be helpful to the most customers.(If you need help right away, don’t post your issue here – we won’t be answering these questions in real time.)

3.     Over the next several weeks, we’ll share the selected questions on our Facebook page and give you the best answers we possibly can. Why Facebook? Because we want the answers to be available to as many people as possible. We’ll also post a link to the answers on this forum. You’ll be able to view the answers even if you don’t have a Facebook account.

4.    Once we answer all of the selected questions, we’ll re-open the submission process.

However, because this isn’t our first internet rodeo, we need to set some ground rules before we get started:

1.  We can’t answer everything. We’ll do our best to answer as many questions as possible. But no, we won’t give you our CEO’s home address or the access codes to ViaSat-2. We also can’t talk about business stuff that hasn’t yet been made public.

2.  We’re looking for questions that apply to more than one person. If you have a specific question about your service that doesn’t apply to anyone else, we won’t be able to answer it here. But start a new thread and our team will be happy to assist you.

3.  Be nice. We’re committed to answering your honest questions, even if you’re upset with us. But overly nasty comments or non-questions (“Why is Viasat so dumb?”) won’t be answered and maybe deleted.

4.  No joke questions, unless they’re really funny.

Hello! So for the past hour or so my Viasat WiFi Gateway has had a solid purple light and had had no internet connection for wired and wireless connection. Is there any reason this is happening and is there any way I can fix it? Thank you in advance.

More of a comment versus a question:
The managers at the call centers REALLY need to have a sit down with employees on phone etiquette.
Rule #1 - If you're not on a call, SHUT THE HELL UP!
Was just on the phone and could barely hear the lady talking to me, over the background noise.  Is the call center in a bar?  Yikes!
Seriously....sounds very unprofessional and makes it difficult to get your call finished. :)

Does anyone with Viasat service, or any Viasat employee want to play the new survival/battle royale game SCUM on my server - SouthernFriedSCUM? You have to email me for the password but, that's in the server list when you find my server.

FYI, Yes the game can be played with Viasat, problem is, the game servers sync all players on a server (up to 64 per server) so, they have a ping lock of 500 ms on most servers. Some server owners set it lower, me I set it higher. Just means my server syncs to my latency - low ping players get no advantage over high ping on my server - we all run like we have high ping.

Okay, more serious question: What are your hopes, or vision, as a company, for Viasat 3? Not asking details, just a general Idea of what sorts of things you expect them to be able to deliver to customers, residential, airline , business and, government wise.

With the upcoming VS3 service, will you be offering an Easy Bake Oven version of the modem?  It would be nice to enjoy a fresh, warm brownie while browsing.  :)

Just as a point to reiterate: The mods such as me, Matt B or Diana will NOT be answering questions directly on here. This is just a chance to ask questions about the service, company, common issues that affect many customers that some of our appropriate higher ups and experts will answer next Wednesday. We will move (and remove) anything that will be better off in a individual thread or inappropriate. So if you have a burning question you want to see an answer to this is the place to do it!

On prior plans, liberty and evolution, you offered a bottom level of quality of service. Evolution was unlimited web page browsing and on liberty the liberty pass. Why do you not do this for the unlimited plans? During peak congestion your service can become almost unusable (and for some completely unusable) for even web browsing while within your data cap. When you go over your data cap, service for the most part is unusable. Are there any plans for a bottom level of quality of service?

i already know some details about this. but its way too confusing on my part. my question is... how come first person shooter games (like fortnite) i can play fine on my nintendo switch. but yet everyone else is having problems with gaming consoles such as pc, xbox, sony, nintendo switch, but i dont on my end. like for me. i can play dragon ball z xenoverse 2 just fine onto my xbox one s. but on my nintendo switch version if that game, it just disconnects everytime. but yet onto my ps4 verison, i can play just fine.

my other question, how come i can play gaming consoles aok on my end. but yet, everyone else has problems.

3rd other question. when are you guys going to bring back the very old tool that you guys let us use to see where our data went??? like you guys did when you were exede but then went back to the name viasat??? do you guys ever plan on bring that tool back??? or not??? if not, then why are you bring it back??? it was a VERY helpful tool for many of us :3 just want to know the reason for that :3

4th other question, how come when a person calls to get services with you guys, how come the represenitive says speeds are up to, but yet people just think ill get these speeds then. ill go with them instead. but when they sign the contract an so on. they come to find out those are the promised speeds the represenitive said, but yet the represenitive said speeds are up to. is it even ok for the person to be doing lawsuit against you guys??? even though THAT person signed and agreed to the contract knowing the limits of satellite internet???

^^^^^
plus... to be honest, i think that is SO NOT COOL BEANS AT ALL!!!

imma done with questions for now :3 PLUS!!! i HAVE to point this out... the reason imma NOT doing my usual typing is.... so that viasat can understand me PLUS!!! ive been working on my typing stuff :3 I HOPE VIASAT CAN ANSWER ALL OF MY QUESTIONS!!! IF NOT ALL, THEN THAT IS AOK!!! HOPE IVE POINTED SOME REALLY GOOD ONES THERE!!!

Just a reminder: This Wednesday is when we'll pull questions for our first Ask Us (almost) Anything!

Again this is your chance to ask some of the higher-ups any questions you may have about the service. These won't be answered by the usual group here but rather some of the experts in the respective areas.

It would probably be useful when stuff like this comes up if you could thumbtack it so it's the first post seen when people come here.

Yeah we're working on trying to make it a sticky post. This forum just doesn't make things super-easy. I'll see if I can get someone to make it more visible besides manually bumping it up

There is the announcement sidebar on the home page but it kind of gets lost over there on the right side:

Needs to be more prominent... and needs to be carefully worded to attract folks to what it is.

ah there it is (I spend most of the day in a different view or on emails so I didn't check so thanks).

I agree it needs to be more out there,  but I think with how Get Satisfaction operates that's as good as we can make it

Me personally I tend to overlook and ignore right hand sidebar content - that's typically where ads are ;)

Thank you everyone for your questions so far! Questions will be pulled tomorrow at some point so if you have any last minute questions about Viasat, why Viasat does certain things, etc please ask (or ask again if you have multiple questions)

Why isnt a Viasat-2 coverage map published? Would be good to know coverage areas and what beam one would be on.
