We were lied to from the very beginnings with Exede. We are planning on going on the road full time in our RV and was told BEFORE we signed up that Exede was coming out with a portable dish set up that would work during our travels. Almost two years later and it hasn't happened. The day my contract expires Verizon will be my new internet provider !!!!!

I'm sorry to hear about that misunderstanding but no, we don't have an RV solution at this time (although it's something we're considering). The issue with a mobile device like this boils down to the antenna dish itself. It has to be pointed at the satellite at all times, which means it has to be a steerable (moving) antenna. We have these for the airlines that we serve with in-flight Wi-Fi, but the cost of the equipment is prohibitive for an individual user. Dish does have a product like this for receiving video. For internet, it's a lot trickier because you have to have it going two ways.

Limited market too. Only people on the go for the majority of the year would want it, even at current residential prices. Truck drivers, RVers that relocate weekly or monthly, that's about it.

A lot of RV parks have internet now. Wireless also in a lot of areas for truck drivers. What might have made sense a decade ago makes even less sense today.
We Rv Full time, staying in one place 5-6 months. WiFi in RV parks is barely usable in most cases (after 11 years RVing I feel I'm knowledgable ) A portable dish allows me to use the service for my long term (5-6 months) residence and pack the dish away while traveling out of primary service area. Verizon "Unlimited" has restriction of 15gb when it slows making it useless for streaming. 15gb is sucked up quickly when streaming. We have the Verizon Jetpack MiFi we purchased specifically for streaming Unlimited. Big mistake
Agreed. Once my contract with Verizon is up, I am looking for something else. I need internet for work and just can't get it worth out dropping $400 per month.
Well I dropped satellite for wireless internet and it works much better for me than satellite internet.

I agree. I believe that the portable RV market could be very, very lucrative for Viasat and I hope that they reconsider their current position. I work fulltime on the road and my cellular hot spot and WIFI extender do not provide the needed bandwidlth. Very, very few RV parks have WIFI with adequate bandwidth.
I drive a semi 48 states 3 eeeks a month. I wish there was a dish for Wi-Fi connection.
Perhaps the sales representative was thinking of the Dish Networks Tailgater. Or they where just telling you what you want to hear.

HD self tuning dishes for Directv are super expensive as it is, and there is a lot bigger market for DirecTV. If it doesnt make financial sense, a company isnt going to do it.
I RV 95% of the time. I don't necessarily need a tailgater style dish but at least dish i can take from state to state with me for work. I travel the continental US, Em handy with tech. Just need a plan/contract and hardware that's flexible. Many RV parks have WIFI yes but they don't provide adequate bandwidth. I need to be close to my worksites not close to a major city where the RV park may possibly provide Decent WIFI.

We are about to become full time RVers as well, and internet is our biggest headache. We plan on six months of the year at a "home base" and split the other six months between two or three places.
Would it be possible to use the satellite that is mounted to a pole with us and simply ensure that we align it correctly? It'd only be 3-4x per year so even if it takes a couple hours to set up, we would be fine with that.

Are you moving the dish that is already installed at your home or buying a new dish? I was going to buy another dish for that purpose but wasn’t sure which one to get.
We never had satellite internet before, as we always had land based options until now. Since posting, we have now moved into the 5th wheel full time and viasat has been installed. So far it's quite good. I'd go so far to say very good, actually. Speeds are regularly higher than our plan.
In the week between the post and signing up, however, Viasat has eliminated the platinum plan from our area, even though we are *physically* capable of it in this area. That was hugely disappointing. We had to go with Gold 30. Never thought I would find myself in a position of begging a company to be able to pay them *more* money, but that's where we are.
I'm going to write a letter to the office of the CEO in hopes of getting a waiver of some sort... as with both of us working remotely, the lower speeds and the lower soft cap are going to be detrimental to our ability to effectively work from home.

Hi David, At this time Viasat does not provide RV service. Review this thread for ideas and solutions from some of our posters.
Thank you for such a prompt reply. I have definitely been reviewing the threads. To be clear, if we commit to keeping the service stationary on one site leased exclusively to us for the full two years, then that would be eligible for viasat service, right?

Yes it would.
You couldn't move the dish if you wanted, especially when going from one beam to another.
So if you have satellite for internet in one location and another option at the other location, but your satellite plan in hibernation when you are not at the one location.
Keep in mind when placing a plan in hibernation there is no guarantee you will be able to get the same plan when taking it out of hibernation.
