Windows 10 data usage

I'm not getting Windows 10 until have no other choice. But here's some information from my info/ave newsletter. Don't know if it will help anyone or not. Or maybe all you Windows 10 know about it.

Automatically Track Data Usage in Windows 10

Most smartphones and tablets have had this feature, but it deserves mentioning it here that PC and laptop users with Windows 10 can easily check their data usage any time – and even get the down and dirty details of what is using up the data. Now most of us with laptops and PCs use broadband connections (Cable, FiOS, DSL, Satellite) which are, for the most part, (in the USA) come with unlimited data. However some of you use 4G or 3G wireless connections with you laptop or desktop – at least some of the time, and most of these are not unlimited. And some of you just might find it interesting to know how much data you’re using.

So if you’re using Windows 10, this what you do.

Start —> Settings —>Network & Internet —->Data Usage

If you do all that, you see this:

I’ve highlighted my data usage in green. All of my data usage was via my Wi-Fi connection. I don’t like wires!

If I click on Usage detail, I see this:

So now you know how to check you data usage on Windows 10 no mater what kind of device you are using.

This is really good information, I used this in Windows 8.1 on my phone but had not come across it in Windows 10. Thanks for posting the instructions. Question, how do you reset the data usage counter to zero? Thanks, Frank

This was one of the first things that I liked about Windows 10, being able to see the breakdown of Internet usage by application.  A limitation is that it does it in 30 day chunks.  You might also download and try the Glasswire program on your PC.  You can adjust the sliders at the bottom of the graph to examine usage by application with 1 minute resolution.

JEP, thanks for the info on Glasswire, I've read several reviews and it gets really good marks. I plan to download it after my new computer gets here middle of the week. From your remark about the Windows 10 Data Usage feature I'm thinking there is not any way to reset the counter to zero on a specific day, like the first day of my Exede monthly usage period, is that correct? Thanks, Frank

Frank, I have not found a way to reset the 30 day count window in W10. I do think it would be a nice feature. I'm not too concerned, since I use GlassWire anyhow, and it gives a much more detailed breakdown of usage.

Steve, thanks for the information. It's odd that it can not be reset in Windows 10 because in 8.1 you could reset it anytime. I'm pretty sure I'll go with Glasswire. Thanks again, Frank
