Will we ever get to see data usage hourly so we can identify when the data mysteriously gets used?

Verizon lets me see data usage hourly and displays this for the entire billing cycle to better identify when the data gets used. Verizon can even tell me if it was email, audio or video data that was used during that time period. I ask this because I believe my digit gets used even when all computed are turned off A silly accumulative bar display is not very transparent at all. If there was another choice of vendors to use I bet this stuff would not happen . NO competition means poor service

Hi Chris, I would be happy to go over your data usage and traffic categories. You can send me an email at exedelistens@viasat.com with your account information and I can take a look. =)

I just downloaded DU Meter but am confused about what it's monitoring - the computer, the router or the modem. I put it on my personal desktop (wired) and ran a youtube on my office computer (wired) but saw no bumps on the meter on the personal. Did I miss something or is it local machine usage only. I need to see my total household usage.

DU meter only records the usage on the computer on which it is installed, while that computer is running.  You could try Satellite Restriction Tracker which reads the Exede usage data directly.  Of course, that is not an independent measurement, but then I am not aware of anyone absolutely proving there was usage outside of what Exede measures.   http://realityripple.com/Software/Applications/Satellite_Restriction_Tracker/#.VMvaiGjF98E

I will take you up on this but the real question is since you can see that why cant we see it ourselves so we can personally manage our own data better. Verizon customers have a tool on line to see this usage hourly and at a granular level most likely like you can when we ask you. I am thinking that if we had this transparency there would be very customers complaining of exceed stealing their data allotments. There are a lot of posts complaining about this and I see no remedy posted.

Wonder what plan you are on and who is your Exede provider?  I know Exede doesn't guarantee it, but I automatically log my usage with SRT and it seems to track with real time with just a small delay.

JEP, while SRT is a useful tool, but you must remember that it will track the Exede meter very accurately because SRT harvests its usage information from the Exede meter. I always use the Networx app to back up the usage data.

Steve - Yes, SRT only reads what Exede has logged, but I have so many computers, tablets and phones that come and go at my house, that Networx won't cover that situation for me.  I thought about changing the firmware in my router, but haven't seen the need, since I don't seem to have any data consumption "mysteries."

I understand JEP. I have never been able to get the nerve to add any third party software to my router either, I lose interest when I read the warning that it may well do bad things to the router and make the router useless.  I have never had any issues with usage in the six plus years with WB and Exede, so I am happy with my internet service.  But then, being a WW2 baby, I use the tv for watching news, shows and movies, the DVD player for movies and the internet for social networking, email and browsing the web.

I just purchased a TP-Link router and I'm still combing through all of it's features. I used an Apple Airport Extreme in the past, and it had nowhere near the features this thing has. I turned on logging, but I'm not sure how much it will deliver in the way of data download usage. I agree, the Exede tool is hit and miss. I'm joining this conversation a little late, but what is the procedure for that tool. Does it update every 12 hours? 24 hours?

jimpryde, it usually updates about every 15 minutes, although it could take up to 24 hours at times. I normally see the updates regularly within 15 minutes.

checked out the SRT tool on line and I think this is just what I am looking for, something to "shadow" my usage so I can learn to either trust the Excede simple bar or locate the source of unexplained data usage before complaining to Excede. And...it is a free download. BUT I bet whatever you download it to (lap top or desk top) will have to be running all the time? Steve?

Chris - The free version only updates Exede usage while the computer on which it is installed is running.  If you pay the $15 (If I remember correctly), Your usage will be logged at a remote server and you can read that record whenever you want.

ive wondered about the usage meter. its almost like its intentionally vague. i guess its not really in their best interest to help you understand, as fine grained data about whats eating your quota could definitely lead to you not "buying more" gigs. so they really have no motivation to invest resources to help you avoiding investing resources in them.  im about to try out that satellite restriction tracker, i remember seeig it way back when it was like a windows only screen scraper, that had been broke  for years like according to some comments.    but im excited now.  i briefly had a screen scraping curling bash script that sorta worked, way back before they went to the SSO login. i guess in the end, if they have SSO login, theres probably an REST/API call for that usage meter. i think ill gladly pay $15 for someone else to have figured it out..... for now...
