It's simply reserved for ViaSat's future use at this time.

Jason,

At this time there is no need to use the USB port.  On rare occasions it is used for diagnostics.  Our services do not require the use of this port at this time.

Does it hurt the modem if you plug your phone into it to charge it?

Ah, the mysterious USB port....
I rember back in the day when satellite tv first came out back in 90s
I kept looking at the usb port in the back of the recievers figuring that
it was there for someday when dish/directv would deliver internet over
those new fangled dishes.... little did i know...

i figure that the usb on the sb2 modems is for servicing them @ viasat

The USB port is likely associated with a new "thingy-mabob" that made a brief appearance on certain modem status pages (but it's still there only hidden). The official response is that the "thingy-mabob"  is confidential and details will be revealed accordingly in due time.

J-taging the modem. It's for uploading software to the motherboard of the modem. it also doesn't have any volts on it so charging your cell phone will take a long time. But by all means plug it in, plug it in.
