Weather Underground and other sites misread my location as Kentucky, not California.  I have/had WildBlue in Colorado and could understand a location misread as CO, but what is in Kentucky with Exede?

Your Internet came from  satellite 22,300 miles in space but first had to get there from earth.  ViaSat has many satellite ground stations that beam the internet up to the satellite from various parts of the country.   Weather Underground guesses your location from your internet IP number and where that number geographically originated on earth.  The ground station that originated your internet connection is probably in Kentucky, making Weather Underground's guess incorrect.

To fix this problem at Weather Underground, click the blue outlined box at the top, right corner of their page in the middle of the text-box that says "Search Locations."  Enter your city there in that same box you just clicked.  A list will appear when you start typing and there you can select your city.

Weather Underground will go to your city.

Bookmark the page.  It will always go  the page/city that was bookmarked.  You shouldn't need it to be bookmarked now, but better safe than going through all this again.

If you get a "Share your location with Weather Underground?" box in Firefox, choose "Never" or it will go back to Kentucky !  Clicking the target-looking symbol on the right-side of the blue entry box you clicked will invoke this question and now is a good time to say "Never."

That is because your IP address is assigned at the ground station that the satellite is communicating with.

What Christine said.

They are most likely seeing the uplink center's location instead of where you are. Sometimes happens even with Cable/DSL.

They don't care what you see.   They could track it correctly if they wanted to.  But they only want our money, not providing a good service with true downloads, speed, billing etc.   Get out while you can.

It can't be done. You're beating a dead horse. It's not Exede tracking anything, it's each individual website you go to.

I view my location being misread as a positive in regards to privacy concerns.

If I have an account associated with a website I will login and my privacy will be governed by the sites privacy policy that I would have already read and agreed to.

The more inaccurate the information gathered by an anonymous website the better.
