During free zone, data speed is so slow that webpages timeout. Downloads are very slow. And this is not my equipment.

Historically, speeds during the early portion of the LNFZ have been slow. Largely attributed to increased congestion as subscribers have learned to leverage the free data using automatically scheduled downloads, manual downloads and heavy data usage activities during that period. During the summer months when school is out the pressure is even greater and peak periods are extended  (also during length school breaks periods such as Christmas and/or spring break). The Liberty plans also encourage "unlimited" use further exacerbating the problem. Symptoms are beam dependent based on the number of subscribers.

If nothing else, it demonstrates why unlimited plans aren't feasible - the capacity during peak periods just isn't there on most spot beams at current subscriber levels.

I agree with "Old Labs" explanation. Several months ago while we were on Classic 15 plan I signed up to Carbonite because one could schedule specific times to do backups. Mine was scheduled between 1215 AM to 430 AM (LNFZ). This is assuming my computer was left ON. I noticed that some nights the backups were not finished. I was attempting to backup my digital collection of photos which at that time was 47 GB. I was doing maybe 2 -3 GB/evening. Sometimes it was a success other times not. I eventually gave up on it and bought a 2 TB USB drive. Also note that there are software tools out there that would allow NETFLIX users the ability to download their next choices during the LNFZ for later viewing. I'm sure there are other tools for some of these GAMERS for downloading some of theri HUGE updates for whatever games they play. This was getting ugly and in "my opinion" abusive of this LNFZ. We moved to Liberty 18 and even during Libert Pass we are able to do the internet things such as eMail, shopping, web browsing, an occassional FACEBOOK video - no complaints even during the congested PRIME TIME (4 PM - 11 PM).

We will be entering Liberty Pass soon with more than 2 weeks left before RESET. We recently had 3 grandchildren visit for three days with their iPad mini's - I discovered that they were watching their favorite shows, doing YOUTUBE videos, and online gaming - eating up 10+ GB in less than 2 days. OUCH. They will be back next week - I'm going to change my GUEST network password and when they ask We'll have a little chat.

I could VENT on this more but what to add a THANKS to Viast for what we have - better than the first Wildblue satelite and looking to the future with Viast 2 and then Viast 3 things will get better.

Hi T McNicol,   There are many reasons that the free zone speeds are slow. Old Labs and  Gregory have explained it well.  At this time of year, congestions is a larger issue as well as the number of devices you are using at the same time.
