Why are Steam download speeds being throttled? This is ridiculous

My Steam download speeds only hit 30KB/s I'm nowhere near my limit and it doesn't matter what time of day I try. A speed test on chrome gets better results so it's something there doing to steam downloads.

If you have slow speeds during the day, other than prime time, and you have plenty of priority data then I would have Viasat send a tech to check your dish alignment, modem etc.

Just a couple random thoughts...

To rule out a possible Steam server issue make sure you're using the same Steam server(s) on Viasat that are used by your hot spot and friends. Remember you internet point of presence is your gateway not physical location - your path to their server is much different than your hot spot or local friends. Alternately just try a different server.

Any QoS enabled on your router? If so try disabling to see if any difference as a test.

Just guesses to further narrow it down, nothing more... nothing less.

Which plan are you on?

I suppose I might try using a VPN to see it's being caused by a false positive video stream throttling (the servers maybe being tagged as having video streaming content). A VPN will evade the video detection algorithms if that's the case. Several free ones or free trials have been mentioned here...

While VPN will be slower overall, speed while downloading may be faster providing at least some evidence it's Viasat.

Some servers, Akami (Origin Games for one) deprioritize us satellite users due to our high latency. I have never seen Akami game servers top 200 Kbps on download - if other non game downloads are doing fine speed wise, it's Steam, not Viasat.

Makes no sense as it was working fine up until 2 days ago and nothing's changed on my network

I haven't messed with Steam in a while. This is something I want to follow since the Summer Sale is probably around the corner so we may hear about that if this is something ongoing.

Bev might have the right answer but we don't throttle steam. How are you on data? Did you reach your plan's inflection point where it's subject to being deprioritized on the network?

I think Tier 2 will be your best shot but I asked the data question because all I've seen is what plan you have. If you go over a certain amount on the Unlimited you can be deprioritized if you surpass a certain amount of data.

Yes after 150GB it's pretty much garbage like I said I'm nowhere near that , well lately it's crap all the time the tech that came out and adjusted my dish even said viasat has way more customers than there current setup can support hence the garbage speeds . There should be some kind of laws against this crap

Long time Steam user here since 2004 and I have the Freedom Plan. I can tell you that my speeds on Steam are consistently pretty good. I can't even remember the last time I had an issue with Steam but I know it was before switching over to the Freedom Plan. I don't ever see what looks like any kind of throttling on the service.
