Where has my usage gone?

And it looks like I am not the only one with a problem.

Last night at 9:47 PM, I got a message from Exede that I needed to watch my usage because I was at 70%. WTF! was my reaction and then jump the kids. Since I go to bed at 10pm, I shut all devices down and went to bed to seek out the problem in the morning.
When I got up this morning, I have an email from exede that my usage has been consumed and that came in at 1:07am.

That means in the first 4 days of my cycle, 10.5 GB of data was consumed out of my 15GB. Not even a remote possibility based upon my typical family usage. Then, in just over 3 hours, while all my devices are shut off, the other 4.5GB vanished.

So, I buy another GB this morning at about 6:20am or so, shut down my computer, take the kids to school, do my morning normal and when I get back to the computer at about 8:30, the 1gb is gone!

I have had very little happy happy with exede since I got it installed. I ended up with a $95 charge to have a tech come out and fix my connection problem a couple of months ago. Come to find out, the original installer did not tighten the bolts to keep the dish on target and the winds had moved the dish. I was so happy to pay $95 because some idiot did not tighten bolts. Especially when I live a couple miles from the Atlantic and winds can be pretty rough here.

I really cannot wait until my contract term is up so I can get rid of this crap and get DSL (not great service but cheaper, more consistent, and more reliable that this crap.

Assuming there are no "mechanical" problems with your modem (that's something ViaSat will have to determine), customer support can only provide you with a general, categorized breakdown of where your data is going. This only provides you with a starting point in making that determination and without invasive monitoring of your internet activities they can do little else.

I wouldn't place too much faith in when the excessive usage emails are received, they are typically late in coming for me, if at all. The data may have been consumed much earlier prior to shutting down.

As I sit here right now and for example, Office 365 was eagerly waiting to update itself across 4 of my machines had I not taken steps to prevent it from doing so on starting up this AM. Typically those updates have run about .5GB (for a total of 2 GB across all machines). On starting up this AM that 2 GB would have been gone in a flash without corrective measures.

Unfortunately, the burden of determining in detail where your data is being used is in your hands. The following two links provide some of the common recommendations to limit your data usage:

Data usage tips | Exede Internet Community

Some tips on Windows 8 data usage | Exede Internet Community

Review those and see if anything jumps out at you. If you require further clarification on any of them, just ask and any number of the regulars around here can assist. Neither of those links are exhaustive and web site and application developers come up with new ways to consume visitor's data on a regular basis so monitoring usage on Exede is an ongoing task. In general, you'll find ViaSat can only make general recommendations (probably due to legal ramifications), but the more detailed responses in those threads may help and are offered "as-is".

Hello Julie, I am sorry it took me so long to respond to your
post here. Been having trouble responding. I did respond to your email
earlier today and look forward to straightening this out for you. As far
as the KB article goes, the information included above is not %100
accurate. If you'd like to go over that article together to clarify
what's going on, it will need to be done off public forum as those
articles and their numbers are employee facing information. Thank you.
