So I figured I'd start a current thread (for bronze, silver and gold unlimited users) who can post what your actually getting. Please use viasat's speedtest link http://speedtest.via-satellite.net/
and then post your results. Also please include your zip and comment on your highest and lowest speeds (since the unlimited roll out). Thanks in advance.

THE BACKSTORY (for those who care)

I came back to exede after leaving a year ago. I left because they wouldn't upgrade my service from 15 to 25mbps, it was only for new customers. So I went with hughes.net (15mbps, 50GB cap) and now I'm back as a new customer. I couldn't resist unlimited. I got installed Thursday with the Gold 30 plan.

I've ran several (>30) speedtest at varying times, but have never seen over 21mbps. I called support while I was getting 15 and was told it was congestion (9pm EST). This is zip code 33547 btw. I called the next day when I was getting 19 and was told everything from weather to issues with viasat2 integration.

So I'm asking myself why I'm paying $50 for 5mbps (25 vs 30), that I'm not getting. My fear is if I downgrade to the silver (25mbps), I'll get like 16mbps. Then if I downgrade to bronze (15), I'll get 12.

A tech came out And replaced my router/modem about three weeks ago. I haven’t gotten above 1.0 mbps upload or download since or for about a month before it was replaced. I have silver package. I work on networks all day so I do understand bandwidth and congestion but I would at the very least like to have some form of usable speed. I know it was ran by Viasat before but since they have put their name on it the service and connection has been terrible. I live in a rural area so if I didn’t have to have internet for work I wouldn’t be paying for this. It’s bad when my AT&T cell phone can get speeds of 12.00 mbps upload and 7.00mbps download and my internet provider can’t even give me 1.0 mbps. I’m from 35575.

I'm on unlimited Silver, average off peak is 21 Mbps, peak 15Mbps perfectly fine for anything I want to do online. That's beam 332 and, each beam is different, some are more congested at various times than others.

Have you tried bronze? I wonder if you'd get same.

Can you provide a link to see what beam on your on? I was citing zip code but beam would be better. Also, is there a way to see how many share your beam or if it's congested. Thanks.

I would be interested to find out if anyone is in California around zip 93454. I looked at the beam chart before but forgot the beam numbers, looked like there were 2 that overlapped in my area.

270 kbps at 8:04 PM on the Liberty Pass.  Totally expected due to Saturday night prime time.  Speeds will be super duper fast after midnight and Playon will be doing its magic till morning.

This is on the unlimited silver plan after using less than 28 GB.

Not unusable for casual web browsing, but certainly not wonderful either.

I'm in East Texas on beam 330 or 331, I'm not sure which.

Silver 25 — -19 down 5 up has been my fastest so far. Slowest has been sub 1Mbps .

Beam 335 if I remember correctly.

The caveat of these plans are the optimized video streaming.  360p, 480p, 720p.  To see what streaming speeds these plans are using you need to run a test with this .....https://fast.com/

The Gold plan throttles your video speed to 720p.  fast.com only tests your video streaming speed.  The other speed tests shows your normal download speeds when you are not streaming video. 2.8mbs is a good speed for streaming.  The silver plan, 480p is showing about 1mbs streaming speed.  A little low for my tastes but still o.k. on a 46" T.V.

So I just realized I can't edit the original post to include updates, haha. Thanks for the feedback guys.
So I did some research and Exede has a user base of about 659k (per wiki). ViaSat1 offers 140Gb/s bandwidth. If my math is right, that would mean if every user was on at the same time, we'd all be able to get ~2mbps. (this estimate supposes that all beams have equal numbers of people, WHICH THEY DON'T).

Viasat2 offers 300Gb/s, or double. That means that when VS2 really gets going, it may be possible to have up to 60mbps offered (with an estimated ~40 being realized).

I've spoken with tier 1 and 2 several times and they gave me an $70 credit for the next 3 months (50 off for new customer and 20 for tech issues) and then 20 for 3 months after that. So I'll be paying for 12mbps service and getting an actual 20mbps. By the time the credit ends, VS2 will be kicking butt and taking names (hopefully).

Overall, I don't like the UP TO marketing, since in my experience you always get more than quoted with other ISP's, but I couldn't be happier with unlimited service. Already used ~40 GB's in 4 days.

More exciting is ViaSat3, to be launched in 2019, which will have more bandwidth than all other satellites combined. Exciting times.

You only have a small window of opportunity to edit posts - it appears to be up until someone likes, comments or replies - so as to avoid conflicts resulting from after the fact changes. I frequently take advantage of that window to correct spelling and grammar to ward off the evil "spelling and grammar" police or to change a word choice which outrages the politically correct when taken out of context or even misinterpreted ;)

But yeah, your math's a bit off (not that I'm the math police but 140 Gbps is 140,000 Mbps divided by 625,000 which comes out to .224 Mbps - yes that is decimal point point and that's the latest subscriber count). Despite that, you've pointed out the problem with fixed capacity satellites - it's a shared resource. That .224 Mbps range is just about what's commonly reported by many on over crowded bems during peak periods. Perhaps coincidentally, it approximates the throttled bandwidth on hard capped data plans.

I prefer to think of it a little differently - what would the maximum number of subscribers be in order to absolutely, positively guarantee each subscriber a minimum 2 Mbps capacity at any given point in time? Easy A on that one - 70,000. Now what would be the price of that plan for ViaSat to maintain the same total revenue stream? About 9 times what they're charging now ;)

No need for anyone to point out the obvious with that's not the way it works since I already know that - it's meant to conceptually convey an order of magnitude and doesn't even take into account bandwidth supplied by Wildblue-1 and allocation of subscribers to that bird.

P.S. While the window remains slightly open, ViaSat has only oversold to the extent that it can't realistically come close to meeting demand during peak hours when everyone prefers toi use the service; there's plenty of capacity at other times that can be leveraged without actually being present at the keyboard.

Looks good now, I have had around 2.5Mbps at times during the week though.  Still usable.  I still do the majority of my downloading though at night, because the speed is faster.  At least I can watch videos now, where before I could barely get it to play without constantly buffering at the lowest bitrate

I use a Mac with Safari so I can't use the test that uses Flash. Using Speedtest by Ookla I've been generally seeing between 2-3 MBPS during primetime. The fastest I've seen was 19 something I believe early in the morning. I'm on the Gold 720 plan.

I had the Freedom 150 GB - Boost 25mbps until yesterday when I switched to unlimited silver.  With the Freedom plan, at first I started getting like 18mbps, NEVER saw 25mbps since day one but that is fine, I was happy with 18mbps. Unfortunately though, it has been going downhill gradually ever since. The last month our best speed would occasionally peak at around 8mbps but is usually around 3-6mbps. Of course, this is when we still have our 150gb of priority data to use. Yesterday I noticed a thread about the unlimited silver plan so I jumped on it and was disappointed to see it is still 150gb per month like my Freedom plan. But thought, what the hell, let's give it a shot and it it sucks, I can move back. Now my previous plan isn't there anymore anyways. Seems to me like the same plan with the "unlimited" bait and switch as it obviously isn't unlimited. I find this trend among service providers to be incredibly disingenuous. 

I hope I understand it correctly that it throttles less when the network isn't congested? Otherwise, what is the difference really? Since upgrading we have noticed a slight increase during the morning at about 5mbps of an on but more or less 2mbps. As the day goes on it gets slower and slower. I just got off the phone with customer support before coming here and the lady said it was likely just network congestion and since we used up the 150gb this period, we are being throttled to give priority to those who haven't used up their data. I asked when is the network congested and she said in the evening. Considering that it's a satellite, that means the east coast starts their evening peak times at 5pm EST or 3pm PST. So being in California, once 3pm hits I can count on rapidly decreasing speeds? If that is the case, Monday through Friday, I will not get any benefit of it unless I want to wait up till late at night. I can get some benefit from it on Saturday and Sunday mornings. 

Since I cannot see the "Gold Unlimited" plan on my account options, can somebody explain the details of that plan? Just curious if it is more data, faster speeds or what?

Ah ok. I have to admit I find a lot of the service issues and congestion explanations odd. I have been in tech for some time, currently working as a developer but previously ran enterprise networks. I have setup a point-to-point satellite system before and of course bandwidth is a consideration among others, but only to the extend that you make sure not overload your equipment. Granted, there are fluctuations of usage that occur at certain times that can slow a network down, but not to the extent that a 25mpbs connection will drop to, what I tested my connection at an hour ago, .33 megabits per second. I would imagine that if Exede is still taking on new customers at the rate they are, they either have not maxed out the available bandwidth or they are over loading the satellite intentionally at the disadvantage of their customers. There really isn’t a good excuse to deliver far less than what they advertise with their plans.

If you see speeds that low, could be other factors. Weather, problems at a gateway, problems with your equipment, etc.

Yes, beams can become full at times, some beams more than others. Just depends on your location.

One question that Exede never seems to answer is what is the lowest threshold? When is the connection speed so low that I know there is a problem? I pay for a service advertised as 25mbps, but can't even top 18mbps. Is that low enough from the mark for them to be concerned? When I am off of my priority data, I enjoy speeds so slow I can't load basic webpages without refreshing 3 or 4 times. I am now on "unlimited data". I am in California, it is 12:11am and I just ran a test where download speed maxed out at 2.4 mbps. Is that what it is supposed to do? Seems irrationally low for a "unlimited" plan advertising speed up to 25mbps. Could this really be caused by network congestion at midnight on the west coast considering the east cost is at 3 am? I doubt that many people are online right now.

Karl, 18 Mbps is certainly not cause for concern, there is not official bottom but, generally, CONSISTENTLY below 1-3 Mbps would be cause for serious investigation into whether it was an equipment issue or something else. Intermittent, out of priority data or, during times of congestion, 1 Mbps is acceptable on most plans, below that consistently, even out of priority data would need to be investigated.

The key is CONSISTENTLY, if it's only at peak congestion for your beam, then  that is the cause and, until VS2 is online, there is nothing anyone can do about that.

I'm feeling much better about my 19mbps, as it seems the standard (at least for people who stalk the forums).  I love the unlimited aspect. Even if I only got 150GB before getting soft throttled, I'd be okay. I loved the 26mbps with DISH (Hughes.net), but 50GB limit killed me and caused many fights with family (3 adult kids).

I'm sure all us gold kids will be getting higher speeds in a couple of months.

Mine is 8.73 mbps download and 3.85 mbps upload.  I too am on the Gold 30 Unlimited plan but have yet to see anything above this speed.  I just assume it's because I live in the sticks so whatever I can get is acceptable since I need it to work from home.  Here's to hoping it gets better.

That sucks. Are you a new customer (i.e. are you receiving the $50 off credit)? If that stays your max, I'd be going to bronze or asking for service credits. Not sure why exede thinks anyone would pay $50 for 5mbps that they never come close to seeing.

I became a new customer in May and don't see a credit on my bill.  I thought about downsizing but was afraid it would affect my streaming if I used it.  I'm not a techy person so any thoughts are very welcomed.

Well, it's more about being a frugal person. The special they are running in my area is $50 off for the first 3 months for unlimited gold $150/month. If you have been a customer since May I doubt any discounts are being applied to your account, unless you've had problems, called in and where given courtesy discounts. If you have done speedtest for multiple days, at differing times of day and the most you are getting is 8mbps, I'd go to bronze and save $70 a month (bronze for me is $80). You can always switch back to Gold or Silver, the plan doesn't lock you in.

My guess is when you call in to complain and ask for cheaper plan they will give you a credit to keep you on Gold. Good luck!

19Mbps is very, very good. On my beam I rarely see that. 1 - 1.5 Mbps is more the norm on congested beams during primetime.

I'm really hoping for 1080. I figure 4K isn't realistic but I think 1080 is the standard these days and that's what I'm looking for. I'm admittedly a little bit of a video and audio snob. I think 720 is fine but it's not really good. I know they're doing what they have to so they can offer us a decent cap and I'm grateful for that. That doesn't mean I don't want to see better in the future though.

When Viasat3 is up, by the end 2019, you'll have no issue streaming 2160p goodness. Of course by then the standard will be 8k or 4320p, 100GB 2hr movies.

I am getting 2.3 Down and 1 up on a 150 silver plan in Arkansas! I am about to tell them to take it out. That is ludicrous for $150! They gave me 5 days to try it since they had it all installed but I can't justify paying that much for 2.3 Mbps when we are supposed to get 25

I'd ask for massive credit at least, if that was the average over several days at different times. Anything less than 5, consistently, should be investigated, and if its congestion, hopefully it will clear when viasat2 is working.

Sounds like you either have a bad install, Wifi isnt configured properly, (Try plugging directly into the modem with a ethernet cable and testing your speed! Im on the silver for $100 in FL and get 19 down and 4 up! Do that and if u still have problems! Email Exede @ exedelistens@viasat.com also go here http://192.168.100.1/?page=modemStatus and tell me what your rxsnr is it will be something like 8.1DB or higher or maybe a little lower! If its below 7.5 you may have problems

Rxsnr goes a lot, lot lower than 7.5 for people on beam edges. I might get 6.5 on a crystal clear day but mine hovers around 6.

Currently, overcast and a light rain here, gateway clear skies 8.2 Mbps down 4,5 up. Not bad for the conditions right now. Unlimited Silver, beam 332, RKS (Wyoming) gateway - not over 150 GB.

I don't do video downloads and just upgraded my plan to Silver Unlimited 25MB.  My speed dropped from 2.6MB on the Liberty 25 Plan to 600KB with the new equipment.  Clear sky last night, signal strength is at 4.1DB.  Exede says everything is great.... No problems for them

If your SNR is only 4.1, that indicates a problem, Alignment, TRIA or, cable most likely. You should contact Exede at 855-463-9333 or, email exedelistens@viasat.com and arrange for that to be corrected.

Here is the link to your modem stats. SNR should be near 10.0, although it is affected by weather and how close to the center of your beam you are located. Readings of 3.0 or less will affect your system performance.

With low SNR readings, you may require Viasat to send a tech out to align your dish.

A tech actually realigned my dish the day I got new equipment. The speed I have now is terrible. Can’t even get above 1.0 mbps
