Hello Marion, the annual one time charge is a fee to cover the associated costs of Exede paying for property taxes on the equipment installed in your home (modem, tria, antennae). It is determined by the local municipality.

Just to clarify-- is it a one time ONLY fee or a once per year fee? Annual seems to suggest that it is charged yearly, but "one time" contradicts that.

It is once a year, a tax charged by your local, county or state.  It does not apply to every state.

Does that mean I will own this equipment after my contract is complete?  If not, then perhaps I need to charge Exede rental for storing equipment on MY property?  Just saying.  Maine doesn't charge property tax on things in my house by the way, is that applied here too?  I didn't notice it.  I will review my bills.

Hello Colorado Bobby, to answer your question, the annual property tax can vary from county to county, state to state and the amount may be based on the city where you have our service. Tax can also be based on the cost and age of your equipment and the state in which you live. The average charge is $3.00-$4.00; however, some can go as high as $9.00 - $10.00 (or higher) in those states with higher tax rates. The charge will be displayed as a one-time charge located under the "Fees" section of your bill.

I looked at my bill, and it seems odd that since I am merely "Leasing" equipment, that I would pay a PERSONAL PROPERTY tax on it.  As it turns out, I don't have any such entry on my first bill, but there is a monthly "lease" fee.  If I had bought the equipment (is that even an option?) would it be different?  Thanks for all you do.

Hi Bobby, as far as taxes go, I do not believe there would be a yearly fee for purchased equipment. Unfortunately we do not offer purchased at this time.

Thanks again.  So let me understand this.  You are charging customers for property that they do not own, and calling it a "Personal Property Tax" payment?

Next question, are you sending these "tax payments" to the different governmental agencies, town, state, or whatever?  It seems that would be like me renting a car, parking it in my driveway, and being billed by the car rental agency for a personal property tax to be paid to my munbicipality?  I don't get it, ....obviously...which is why I started questioning in the first place.

Please elaborate on this.  I don't think you have the right to charge TAXES for people who are parking your equipment for the term of a lease.

Regards
Bob

Hi Bobby,

To answer your question, yes we are sending these "tax payments" to the different government agencies. Not too much to elaborate. This charge is just a fee to recover the costs associated with paying for property tax that ViaSat will need to pay in 2015 for the equipment.

I usually would not care about this but it did strike a cord, Tax's!

They tax ya when ya make it, they tax ya when you spend it, they tax ya save it, they tax it when you die.

As Bobby mentions; Customers paying "Personal Property Tax" seems to be pushing it. Do we receive a tax depreciation for the equipment? Do we own the equipment?

Just my 2 Quacks on the subject.

Please send me a receipt for the taxes paid to Medway Maine.  I still suspect this is merely a "Fee" for applying a "Fee."  I am a skeptic, an atheist, and a child of the sixties, so don't feel picked on Exede, I question EVERYBODY.
