What happened to all of my priority data?

"What happened to all of my priority data?" is a question we see on this forum very often.  

Most of the time, it is simply due to something using data in the background that a customer is not aware of.  

Even I had a situation where almost two gigabytes of my data disappeared during the first two days of a billing cycle.  I checked one of my computers that I thought I had disabled updates on and I was wrong.  Automatic updates were turned on and the computer decided to pull an update without my knowledge.  This wasn't Viasat's fault, it was my own fault.

Here is another situation to put things into perspective.  My water bill is usually $23 to $25 a month.  You can imagine my shock when I opened my water bill this month to discover the bill was $35.  I didn't go nuts blaming the water company for charging me more money.   I didn't go nuts saying "I haven't changed my water usage so why should the bill be higher?"

I thought about it and remembered I recently had some construction projects done outside my house so my reasoning was, "Gee, those guys used a lot more water than I thought."  It was no big deal.  I paid the bill and went about my day.  

Well, a little while later I was sitting on the toilet pondering the mysteries of the universe.  Then without any action of my own, I heard the toilet make one of those noises you hear when it uses water.  It didn't do a complete flush, but it was obvious it was using water.  I suddenly realized the toilet had been doing this the last few weeks and I had been ignoring it.  Now I realized what caused my water bill to go up.  It was me ignoring the water leak in my toilet that caused me to suddenly have a higher water bill.

Fortunately my water bill isn't  too high, but when I get around to it, I will install a new flushing mechanism in my toilet to get my water bill back to normal.

The moral of the story is, if you think Viasat is stealing your data then it is time to fix the toilet.

No one will listen because the problem with the toilet is too much paperwork.

Your analogy of Viasat and toilets is just WAY too easy.....kinda like a slow pitch over home plate. 

I'll keep them to myself but BOY did I instantly think of some doozies.

Too bad they don't make routers that can track your toilet usage (and faucets), tell you the amount of usage on each and tell you the type of traffic on each - if on a well avoid multiple simultaneous downloads. Throttling flushes of certain types of activities with a water saving device is just a way to get you to flush twice and pay more. You'd be better positioned to prove the water company was stealing your water with your own router (roto routers come highly recommended around here).

And now with Smart Toilets apparently they can steal my data also... progress. So maybe my Asus router can keep track of its water usage/traffic with a custom firmware.

My grandfather used to watch his usage.  He grew up in the country, and even though he didn't have city water, he still conserved water.

His motto was,  if its yellow let it mellow,  if its brown flush it down.
