We just got a new plan (liberty boost) and we already used 7 gigs and we have 23 more days to go.We do not watch anything. NOTHING. Really!!!

I believe I smell the stink of Windows 10 here.  Just on this forum alone, I have read of Windows 10: burning up almost 1 GByte on just one update; repeatedly downloading the same update that continues to fail to install; and running multiple completely useless streaming applications on your computer that burn up data like Facebook on steroids.

If you are running Windows 10, that is the first culprit I would suggest that you look at.  The following topics might help you get control of Windows 10, as well as point to other culprits that might be burning up your data:

We don't have windows 10, We never upgraded because of the fact that the updates would use all the data every month.

Direct TV watches what you watch. then they make suggestions as to what you should watch, BUT then they record it for you without you knowing it.   I have searched and searched for a cure for Direct TV from using up our DATA with out us knowing it.  I was told it couldn't be done.   WRONG !!   Here is the cure to stop Direct TV from downloading ON DEMAND programs.  And you will still be hooked to the internet IF you still want to listen to Pandora , ETC.      WRITE THIS DOWN

Go to MENU ,  SEARCH AND BROWSE ,  TV SHOWS ,  GO TO GENIE SETTINGS.

NOW  TURN>    GENIE RECOMMENDS OFF.

NOW THEY CAN'T RECORD WITHOUT YOU DOING IT YOURSELF.

Your Direct TV Genie receiver is NOT connected ... So you never download anything such as Pandora or any programs?  If so , then this won't help...SORRY

Other culprits that I have heard of are: antivirus programs like AVG with sloppy updates; unknown and unanticipated devices, such as ipads, that connect to your internet using wifi; irresponsible websites like CNN and Facebook that like to burn up your data; and Direct TV or other similar "genies" that want to feed you "extra" programming by downloading it through your internet connection instead of using their own satellite connection as they are supposed to.  Possibly you might be afflicted with some of those data burners?

What I do know is that data usage can be managed.  I have the liberty pass 12 plan and, so far, have used 28% of my data while being about 67% of the way through my current billing period.

Well you must be te ONLY person using the internet! And you must not do  much of anything on the net cause the gigs BURN up for just about everyone ive talked to with exede! I WISH so BADLY that I would have just kept my wild blue account! I AVE LEARNED A GREAT LESSON IN LIFE! never uprage! NEVER, EVER! ESPECIALLY IF ITS AN ASSOCIATE WITH TE COMPANY BECAUSE THEY LIE and tell you things that will pursway you towards that upgrade! Like, omg you will be AMAZED at thhe difference if you upgrade!Theres no comparison! Its lightning fast! Its like day and night! You will be SHOCKED! We don't even have your modems around anymore! Those are antique! Not many people are still using wild blue these days! As a matter of fact, if you do cange, we don't even want your modem back, you can just toss it to the trash. If you don't upgrade now, we are going to be getting rid of wild blue resl doon so you will eventually have to upgrade anyway! AND it was suppose to be NO PRICE DIFFERENCE!  SO I WAS TOLD!!!! HA! Was I ever LIED TO! I HATE EXEDE with a passi0on! I absolutely cannot wait for the DAM contract to be up so that I can go find a decent internet provider! I PROBABLY could get away wit not having to wait the 2 years REALLY, Because Exede has not done their part either as to what I was suppose to be receiving when I signed the contract so really its a VOID contract! I'm working this one out still to be sure, but CANNOT WAIT to have a good provider!  Exede  internet is definatly by far the WORST and crappiest internet one could ever have!

It may be persons that visit the Internet but it is our devices with their software and hardware loads that consume out data allowance.

What steps have you taken thus far to determine where your data allowance is being used?

Please describe your "network"?

Operating System(s)

Wireless devices?

Liberty 12 plan also and I never use up all my data. I download small YTube programs. So far never used up all my data. I also go on Facebook and download pictures.

My data consumption for everyday internet activities has so far turned out to be much lower than I expected it to be and I'm certain that the VMWare virtual network adapter throttle that I have in place is essential for that to have happened.

Near the end, on dial up, I was actually using more data.  However, I was also constantly having to do browser page refreshes in order to get websites to load, since the website kept timing out my connection, and it looks like that consumed a lot more data than I expected.

From what I am able to see, the real problems with data usage are: windows and its ridiculous updates and "apps" streaming; Direct TV and other similar "genies;" bloated antivirus programs like AVG; unknown and unanticipated devices, such as ipads, that connect to your internet using wifi; irresponsible websites like CNN and Facebook that like to burn up your data; online banking websites that you need and that constantly try to twist your arm in order to make you use a faster internet connection; etc.

I'm certain that any website can be made to work with even dial up internet.  When websites don't work with dial up or other slower connections, it is always because the website owners don't want their website to work with slower connections.  As for why, from what I have seen, it is because:

(1) they are lazy arrogant jerks infected with RTFM and STFW, and don't want to do what it takes to make their servers work with slower connections;

(2) they are using Microsoft server software, and Microsoft has become notorious for producing programs that refuse to support backward compatibility, so that Microsoft can sell more bling like Windows 10 and also force you to waste more of your own resources so that you also are forced to spend more elsewhere other than on Microsoft, not that Microsoft has any business trying to force you to do that but obviously Microsoft doesn't care.
