Dear Exede Users, All I can add to the situation is comfort that in two years (or end of your contract) you can select another company. I've heard that Exede is testing a new "no-limits" plan that is only currently available to new subscribers. We can ask that we be upgraded to this plan, but when... I do not know. I try to limit my video viewing to after midnight. However, apparently my iPhone is using all my allowed 10 GBs in a few days .. I text only every 2 or 3 days, 2 or 3 texts? Let's hope that Exede DOES mean well and will recognize that in today's world, it is not possible to limit data; it only results in a form of censorship. I'm gathering information in my area (extremely rural) for possible new competing companies coming into play. That will be my option when my contract expires.  I'm not sure the correct name of my account (I selected "Exede Internet-Classic" in the categories window.)

Hi Gardeniabee,

It sounds like you are referring to our Freedom Plan.  This plan is open to existing customers if available in your area.  I can enter your zip code at www.exede.com and check for available plans in your area.  Please send me an email to exedelistens@viasat.com with your account and contact information.

I have another idea for users whose lives require steady access...  I am a librarian, or was until I retired, and I know that libraries offer free access, compliments of your library services.  I'm thinking that I will take my laptop at least twice weekly to the library for updates and other needs -- printing, bill-paying, etc.  It's not working with Exede because my needs require more than they can currently offer.  So, using my local libraries, I can take care of business.  I don't own a television and must wake up at midnight to enjoy any educational or entertainment videos I want.  Forget news.  What are they anyway but propaganda companies?  I encourage everyone to HANG ON and use their libraries until their contract with Exede allows them to close their account.  In the meantime, you may be able to discipline yourself to a couple days of week; tell your family that you will only be able to e-mail two days a week for instance.  And if you have social accounts (I have only Twitter; Facebook is a farce) your social accounts can be updated also twice weekly.  Just ACCEPT the fact that Exede as currently configured is not serving our needs.  We didn't know it when we signed up, don't beat yourself up or get mad at Exede; I doubt they understood the current information requirements of a normal human being either!  Just do what you need to do to get your banking and communications taken care of, and move on to another service when you can.  In the meantime, USE YOUR FREE ACCESS AT YOUR LOCAL LIBRARIES!

Ya know I set at my computer at least 6 - 8 hours a day, no I don't watch TV Or streaming videos but I make a living on ebay, so I spend hours viewing pictures and uploading them, a lot of research and constant face book in between time. Dozens of e/mails back and forth most with pictures, And I watch my share of youtube also, and I never have ran over my allotted 10gb. And do all my banking and pay my bills.

Wow!  That's amazing.  I am unable to keep under 10 gb in a week.  Sometimes it's gone within a few days of the new time period.  And I always stop videos on news sites during the day.  And ONLY watch videos after midnight.  I MAY be on my computer 3-4 hours a day. I Twitter but that's low data.  I rarely upload/download photos.  When not on the computer I turn WiFi OFF.
I wonder why such a difference? Do you also have mobile phone?

gardeniabee,

Simply stopping/pausing videos when they play may not be enough - some will continue to download although not playing.

What you want to do is prevent them from downloading to begin with - both AdBlock Pro and FlashBlock browser add-ons can help out there.

And folks, support your local library as well as librarians... after ditching my desktop computer in favor of a mobile workstation, the library has become my go to backup option when needing more data. Anything to avoid a much longer daily commute.

gardeniabee,

I would chime win with Bobbie Blackman. We have the Exede 10gb plan, and almost never use more than half the allotted bandwidth. I am at my computer all day every day, and my wife, using the same account, will log in with her own computer for e-mail and browsing. We place no restrictions on e-mail, often receiving and sending mail with substantial attachments. I browse web sites at will--however, I employ AdBlock and Flashblock (Lab Rescuer is correct: a "stopped" video will continue downloading in the background). We do a lot of shopping on-line and I manage my own web site. I frequent a number of news sites, and very often view videos at them. I also (not every day, but periodically) download a fair amount of resources for my work, ranging in size from 20mb to 100mb. We do NOT subscribe to ANY "social media" sites.

With what feels to us to be unrestricted, unfettered internet usage, we have to really work hard to use more than half what is available to us on the 10gb plan.

I normally use more than half but always have plenty, A lot of facebook, buying and selling, but there you can shut the videos off where they don't load unless you click on them, I'm beginning to see where this phone thing might have a lot to do with the high usage.

A smart phone would certainly do that, if setup to prefer wifi over cell service for data connections.

No I have exede voice but I added that later and it doesn't use any dada. That may well make the difference I don't know. That will be the first question I would ask before I change over to straight talk or something like that. I will ask it here rather than on the phone, The employees that monitor here seem to be more knowledgeable plus it's being saved in b&w, whereas calling in if you can understand them I have noticed you might be told whatever it takes to make you go away.

Hi Bobbie Blackman, With Exede Voice service that does not eat up data, you are correct but any other voice service will. This is anything such as cell phones using your Wifi or if you have something such as Vonage, those voice services love to take up data. Thank you, we do everything we can to make sure our customers have the correct information! We are always here if you have questions. =)

Freedom and Evolution 20 are now being offered to existing customers on beams having sufficient capacity to support them, albeit higher pricing than new customers - although I don't see the fine print for new customers, I suspect that new customer pricing represents promotional rates.

Go to exede.com enter your ZIP Code, underneath the new customer rates you'll find a link to existing customer pricing if available to upgrade. No link - your out of luck.

For an example of an eligible beam, enter 10001 (NYC to BOS corridor).

And with that, it's once again time to make the donuts (as my downloads have completed)
