On demand will not work well. You will have to wait for episodes to download which will eat up your data.

Connecting your receiver to the internet would be a very bad idea in many cases.  The receiver will also download content without  you doing anything.  Your data threshold can be used up very quickly.  Viasat doesn't work well for a lot of streaming video.  Many, or most plans have a video limiter, limiting the resolution, some streaming starts at dvd quality (even lower).  A lot depends on your location and how congested the service is there.

UNLESS you live in a rare high capacity spot beam (since it's not public where they are, I'll use that term).  Performance -may- be better then.  No doubt that one particular person may be commenting about that at some point.  Their service experience is not "typical", and does not apply to everyone (fact).

Dont even think about it. Even Viasat reps will tell you Viasat is not meant for cord cutting. Hooking up your receiver to Viasat will eat your priority data away and then you get nada.

As bubs intimated, the DirecTV receiver will almost assuredly download content, regardless of  your On Demand activities.  It will not only download guide and program updates, but even those movies that are already downloaded to the receiver and are available to buy and instantly watch at any time.  It's very likely that those movies, more than the guide and program updates, are what chew gobs and gobs of data.

In all, as many have intimated, it's a VERY bad idea to connect your ViaSat service to your DirecTV receiver.
