Very poor download speeds

Viasat not providing the service I am paying for.

I began using Exede/Viasat the last week of November of this year.  I am on the Unlimited Gold 30 mbps plan.  However I have never experienced upload speeds anywhere near this.  Much of the time I am lucky to even see 5 mbps.  Customer service is nearly non existent regarding this issue.  Its just power down, disconnect, type of instruction.  I changed over from Dish network to this so called unlimited plan. I believe Dish was faster even though Dish contracted through Viasat I believe.  In reading other posts, some seem to believe that Viasat is being dishonest with what speeds are obtainable with what modem.  I certainly hope this is not the case.  Must I use a modem rented from Viasat or am I better off using a faster more powerful modem available on the market.  I do have Viasat phone service as well.

I would love to be writing a post in praise of Viasat.  However at this point I can't do so.

First thing to do is to not use the Wi-Fi for your connection.  There have been known issues with it.  Use Ethernet for your connection.  Are you getting slow speeds because you are over your 150gigs?

There are no modems on the market that works with Exede...you must lease their modem, and even if you could buy a modem on open market Exede would not activate it and you'd have a brick..

Speeds vary greatly from one beam to another and time-of-day...congested beams are very common from about 5pm until well past midnight..Exede's contract to you says "Up-TO" so no speed is promised or contracted by you.  Congestion is worse during holiday periods and when kids are out of school and adults are home from work.

Expect speeds to improve after VS-2 is operational and customers switch to it..probably in Feb./March time frame..

5mbs is a good speed and should improve when VS2 goes live.  You really shouldn't see any problems streaming or surfing the net with speeds of 5mbs or even less.

I would kill for 5Mbps! I average about 0.8 during Primetime. People have way unrealistic speed expectations when it comes to this service. You get "up to" 30Mbps and my guess is you will get that at 4am in the morning

You also said you had internet through Dish. That was either through Hughesnet or Viasat. You might have got better speed on Hughesnet right now. Did you get 150Gbs of data? No you didn't. So do you want speed or volume? Right now it is hard to have both.

I actually want what was advertised and I pay for. Not sarcasm.

No sarcasm.  Advertised speed is "up to".  Always has been and always will be.  If you can't survive on 5mbs or less more times than not, than satellite internet is not for you.  Sorry you didn't read your contract, but facts is facts.  Some get well over their "advertised" speeds.  Most don't.  As stated above, when VS2 comes online this will probably all be moot.  ( I'm not a lawyer, but hey, everyone else throws in legal talk, so...

If that's holiday slowdown I would take that 365 days a year!

Yea. I was home alone and everything was working fine. Streaming was smooth. Usually 12-16 Mbps during that time though. You must be on the fringe of a beam somehow. I can handle that speed or less by myself, but with the whole family there 6 Mbps becomes too little fast.

Yes I am on the fringe of one of the most congested beams there is!

That’s not good. Hopefully the new bird will have slightly different beam patterns.
