How could I have possibly used 10 gigs of data in less than 48 hours? Something is wrong and I want some answers!

There are many ways to easily use 10 GB in 2 days. Aside from activities such as streaming video and downloading large files that you know you did, there are updates, cloud syncs, remote backups and such that can and do happen in the background on many devices which you may allow to use your connection. Those can happen with little or no notification to you.

If you do not have an ad and media blocker, most webpages load images and videos that use data in a hurry. Social Media sites can gobble a ton of data in just a few minutes. I suggest UBLOCK ORIGIN to minimize that sort of thing using your data. It is available for Firefox, and Edge. Ublock is available for Chrome and Safari as well (branches of the same project)

If you send your account and contact information to exedelistens@viasat.com and request a usage review, they will be able to tell you when the data was used and, what type of usage it was (audio/video, updates, storage, etc...)

I very seldom use streaming or watch video. I backup to a a thumb drive. I don't use any online back up of any kind. I rarely even get on social media sights. I even have Facebook deactivated. Thank you for your reply.

Hello Donald,

There are many ways that data can potentially be used.

I suggest reading my topic posted here:

One big culprit can be computer updates. Windows will download HUGE updates in the background if you don't have certain settings changed. That was a big problem for us for a little while.

I only turn computer on when I use it and have auto update off. I'm going to get on touch with exede today and let them tell me what's using the data. Thank you

Good luck. We had a lot of trial and error in making sure everything got locked down. I even had to buy a new router so I could block certain things from accessing the internet outside of our free time (like game consoles, kids kindles, etc).

Also, check out this other thread about Data Usage and the video has some methods to control your PC from using up tons of data. Not the best article but it has some helpful info  to see what Windows does that eats data.

Hi Donald,  We can provide you with some information regarding the data you used.  Please send your account information to exedelistens@viasat.com. As pointed out, there are many ways to a large amount of data in a very short period of time.
