Earlier I posted about "UNLIMITED," which is NOT unlimited. With day-time speeds (all kids around here are in school) of .25 - 1.1 Mbps, my internet is not usable.
Anyhow, I have not unplugged my router but have turned off wifi for all cell phones and disconnected all laptops from Exede (using a mobile hotspot, which THANK GOODNESS I didn't get rid of!). YET - in the past 48 hours, we used 22 GB of data! What the hell??? That's more than a third of my limited-unlimited data! How is this possible? Any ideas on what the heck is going on? I need help! I am using this to work and my husband and I have even talked about moving to get better internet service now that I am working from home (ridiculous!).
The last time I had Exede, I swore I would never come back. Yet, I stupidly believed the sales person on the phone AND the technician who told me this was unlimited with no data caps. I can't help but feel that I've been duped (again) and will never recommend Viasat to anyone. I've had a technician come to my house and nothing is improving. If it doesn't improve, I will contact the BBB and try to determine if there is legal action. This message board is riddled with people in the same boat. I'm at a loss...
Thanks for your help,
Terri

So while I can't address the other issues you are having with Viasat I can talk a bit about why your usage stats look like you were consuming data when you were unplugged. I work from home online all day so I am very mindful of my usage of data. I always want to make sure my watching Netflix wont make it so I cant work at some point before the end of the month. So I did some experimenting watching what Viasat says my usage is versus what I was recording at my end. Viasat's displayed usage is no where near real time. It takes a half a day or so for what is displayed on your dashboard to reflect what you actually use. I am not sure why there system is set up that way but it is the way they work.

That really all depends on what you're trying to do. That, even the .25, can be enough to generally browse, the the speed of 1.1MB should be high enough to do just about anything other than streaming and videos.
Additionally, the only way to ensure that nothing is connected via WiFi and using your data is to disable the WiFi in the ViaSat modem.
Lastly, unlimited simply means you are not cut off. No speeds are guaranteed, though .25 is pretty darn dismal, no doubt.

Let’s move into the 21st century and just say .25 is insufficient. Browsing is not all most people want to do. Why some continue to defend this as usable broadband is beyond me.

I neither defended a speed of .25, nor claimed it was sufficient. I simply stated .25 can be enough for general browsing.

Is that your normal HughesNet speed and, if not. Would you be happy with those speeds?

Bradley,
First, I suggest a "Reading Comprehension 101" brush up course, since you seem to have a habit of deriving things from sentences that aren't there.
No, 250Kbps is not my normal HughesNet speed.
Thirdly, since the first seems to apply, I'll explain what the word dismal means. It means "disgracefully bad", to use the Google's informal definition. Do you imagine I would be happy with a speed I consider disgracefully bad? The OP stated that, with speeds of .25 - 1.1Mbps, her service is "unusable." And, as I stated in my initial reply, it depends on what you're trying to do with that speed. Unusable is a relative term. Usable is not a synonym for "happy with".
Do you now understand?

I understand you don’t even have ViaSat, but troll telling people they should be able to browse with .25 or do most anything but steam with 1.1. How about you and everyone else let others decide what speeds are sufficient for their needs. You don’t decide what’s sufficient for me or anyone other than yourself. Quit making pointless posts. Thank.

Bradley,
How about you worry about the posts you make, and I'll worry about the posts that I make. I'd also advise that, when you do reply to a post, you understand what it says before you do so, as you're STILL attributing things to my post that were never said. Trolling? You may want to learn about that, too, and then stop doing it.

My speed tanks every evening but I just get used to it. Some nights I can stream 4K and others I can't... that's life. People are putting the Internet in their habits like they used to have with TV. You remember don't you... the average person was spending 5-8 hours a day in front of the TV? I had a hard time believing that was the way it was until I took notice of what people were doing when I was at their house in the evening. Here's 3 speed test I ran tonight and the peak hours thing is noticeable.
1st at 7PM, then 9PM, last at 11PM tonite.... miserable speed at 7 but I only have a 12Mbps plan so I guess it will have to do... About 11PM it started recovering... and I'm back to Amazon Prime. How's your speed...? I missed that part.

Speeds are fantastic for me. Thanks for asking. Unless I try to use it for something during prime time. Little batgirl and robin duo is cute.
Point remains. If anyone is going to post that .25 speeds are sufficient for browsing (though dismal? WT?), the ignorance will be redirected.

Bradley, you REALLY need that course, as you're still missing a key part. That part is "can be". Do you need me to explain what "can be" means? It's sort of like the word "may", Bradley. IOW, that means it may be able to, not that it always is able to, which, for some reason, is what you seem to be gleaning from that statement.
"....even the .25, can be enough for general browsing" - Do you understand what this statement means?
Again, "Reading Comprehension 101".
There are people out there who still browse with dialup. The average dialup speed is about 40-45Kbps, which is less than 1/5 of .25Mbps. Is it ideal? No. Does it work? For some pages. Hey, wait, that also means that dialup CAN BE enough to browse! Look at that!
Get it now, Bradley? I truly hope that you finally do, because this is getting patently ridiculous.

Classic Champion right there. Very classy.
I get your point.
You’ve made it. You think .25 is sufficient for general browsing. I don’t. Most people would agree, but a few on these forums seem to like to point out how “usable” those kind of speeds are. I’ll be glad to counterpoint.

"How about you and everyone else let others decide what speeds are sufficient for their needs."
Well ALRIGHT! I think 30Mbps is what I think is sufficient for my needs! Give it to me Viasat. ( How stupid is that statement?)

I'm thinking Viasat should change its name to LAGasat. Their service lags - and even their displayed usage lags! LOL! This is so disappointing - how can a person ever monitor their usage if they don't know if it's from today, yesterday, or a week ago!
Another question for you, Jack - how do you measure your data? Solely using the Viasat meter? Or do you use something externally?
Anyhow, we did use frivolously because we thought the service was truly unlimited. I'm hoping next month will be better.

There is a disclaimer that it may take up to 24 hours for the data usage to appear.
Since you've got the luxury with that hotspot, try unplugging the modem/router for a good 24 hours and see if any usage accumulates during that period - it can't report incremental usage unless powered on. Once you power back on it should report any incremental usage that had gone unreported when turning it off. Check usage immediately after unplugging, a few times at regular intervals and then when powered back on (maybe after another 15 minutes).
But as Jack notes most of us use our own routers to verify the accuracy (or inaccuracy) of the Viasat usage meter while also getting more steails about exactly how that usage is occurring and where.
P.S. Any chance you've got a DirecTV or Dish receiver connection to your router? Sometimes those get forgotten about and can cause some major data loss.

Oh - I forgot to say that I've disconnected the TV as well.
Thanks for the tips, Old Labs!
And Bradley - my point exactly!!!

Cellular isn't an option for me at home, if it were I'd probably be gone - but I might look into weBoost to see if I can make it an option - when I've got a spare $500+ laying around I might actually give it a go - what's to lose? Off hand looks like my entry point is the weBoost Connect 4G with both outdoor and indoor antennas to have a reasonable shot at it.
