Upgrade Killed my speed.

Exede internet was installed 9 days ago. I was advised to get a low data plan because I could upgrade for free if needed. I moved to Exede for work because I have to upload file backups as well as a VPN for subscription based CAD software. The first four days were great with 20+ MBPS download speeds and as high as 5 MBPS upload on every day at any time. I ran out of data quick and recognized that the unlimited plan was best although more than I wanted to spend. The next day was so slow that my internet was unusable. The phone technician stated that the 12g to unlimited plan didn't transfer correctly and my service was in a low priority adjustment because the software was treating my account like I was over my allotted data. Since the change I have had 4 days of unusable speed so I made another call. The result was an explanation that my .1 mbps upload speed was due to local usage. I know that 4 days of that is far from the truth, and the previous 4 days were great (During all hours). Some discussion about unlimited was not supposed to be offered in my area so I'm assuming the bandwidth is being limited. I'm going to try the 50G plan to see if that fixes my problem. If it does not, and no one can fix my problem next week, I will have no choice but to demand a full refund and change service.

So let me get this straight. You signed up for a plan witha data cap, went over your data cap, and now you are about to demand a refund? Good luck with that.

You didn't get that straight, I have unlimited data and the speed was what got limited. They can fix the problem, refund my money or my CC card company will refund my money. They made promises that they have not met.

You mentiomed a low data plan first, then an unlimited plan, then a 50 gb plan. Everyone of those plans have limitations and none of those plans are immune to conjestion during primetime.

If you have really large files to move, I would suggest transferring them after midnight.

Keep in mind, speeds this week are going to be slower than they were last week. Lots of kids and adults are staying home this week for Thanksgiving. More people at home means more people using bandwidth.

Yes I did mention all of those plans and if you read and understood the post you would clearly see why all those plans were mentioned.

The point of the message wasn't to find the best time to upload backups, the main point is that the upload speeds are nearly unmeasurable... and that there seems to be a correlation with the upgrade.

To help fill in the blanks, the reason for the slow speeds (Starting last week by the way) is that each plan likely has its own bandwidth and customer pool. Its likely that too many people are sharing the unlimited plan and the speeds are horrible as a consequence.

Either way I paid for better service than Im getting, I know Viasat is capable of better speeds because I had those speeds in the beginning. Now I am not getting what I paid for, they should fix this (As in that's the right thing to do), and if they don't I will get get my money back and share the truth.

Sounds like you are using cloud based services to do your backups. That is a very bad idea on satellite internet. Honestly, with what you are looking to do, I think you need to look at other internet options.

Feel free to share the truth all you want. Satellite internet has limitations.

My backups are not the problem. They are only changed files and after hours. This is a secondary issue, they may not always backup and can get addressed later as the secondary concern. The primary issue is SLOW SPEED while I'm trying to get work done. No backing up while I work. I still have my old provider, Windstream DSL on 18 year old wires. It sucks but is better than this since my unlimited upgrade. I'm on it now because Exede/Viasat is painful.

Understood. Exede also doesn't play well with VPN's. That will also cause you slow speeds.

He is going to reply back and say his vpn connection worked fine before he used all of his priority data.

Vpn connections always work better on landline internet. I have a friend who lives down the road from me who would switch to Exede in a heartbeat if he didn't need to use a VPN for work. So instead he has to settle for his unreliable 6 mbps AT&T DSL.

Most VPN connections do not like latency.

I know VPNs are slow and it gets switched off when not in use. With everything off its so slow that things time out.

Get a business plan.  These plans we are on are simple consumer plans and generally  they run on a priority of about #8 out of 10.  When you run out of priority data on a Classic plan you go to "background task" priority and that means you live and die on leftover bandwidth with an active limiter.  People on a Liberty plan that run out of priority data will go to about #10 which is better than background.  The unlimited plans go somewhere in the #8-9 range when priority data is spent which is still better than background or an expired Liberty plan.  When a beam is saturated the priority table kicks in big time.  It's war zone out there with the consumers and everybody loses, but that's life until February.

A business plan will put you up to about priority 7 which means us consumers will feel the pinch of business plans getting  their bandwidth at our expense of slower speeds.

Who's #1??  Air Force One. Then it goes to Military, other government contracts, airlines, universities, business, and we consumers get the table scraps which during a normal week are a horn-of-plenty  but not over holiday weekends or evenings.

In February things are going to change when the capacity of ViaSat will be triple what it is now.  So consider the time of day and where 650,000+ other subscribers are probably at.

Bev, Champion, has experience with a business plan.  Perhaps she will see this thread and enlighten you to the benefits of a business plan in detail.  If she misses this thread, perhaps you will start a new thread asking for input about business plans and their advantages and of course, disadvantages.

Thank you, that makes sense. I will enquire about a business plan, and see if my military contractors want to help.

Windstream does not have a data cap so data was never a concern. My work wanted to do off line backups and the initial backup (5GB) was calculated at 22 hours so I researched other options. Exede sold me on their option so I pulled the trigger. I was getting 20 to 25 mbps Download and 4 to 5 mbps upload. The 5GB backup took about 2 hours and 15 minutes. Because I don't download games or movies, I had no idea how much data I would use. The sales person said to get the smallest  GB 25mbps and that I could upgrade if I needed with no penalty. After that backup and a few other things, it was clear that I needed to upgrade so I bucked up to the Unlimited and ever since it has been at a crawl. If it wasn't fast in the beginning, I would assume it was all just sales lies, but I know it can be faster so fixing it is the optimal solution. If they sustain that it cant be done, than I will move on with my rightful refund.

Sounds to me like your account isn't setup right for unlimited. Perhaps it wasn't upgraded correctly. I would contact a mod on here to have them look into it.

That's why I listed it, maybe someone there can help. My long calls went to level 2's but never got to level 3. Both of them were after hours. Because of the early faster speed with the first plan, and the slow speed of the second plan, a software issue with the changeover was my first thought. Especially because the website showed the unlimited plan on the right of the dashboard page, but showed that my data was 100% on the left side of the page. I mentioned that in the first call and the level 2 said that was the problem that would get fixed. The weekend went by and Monday night I called again, the new people told me everything is fixed. The website page is fixed but my speed is still testing at 0.4 MBPS upload. I will try one more call, and a service call to fix or remove. Viasat is only 10 miles away but that's a last resort.

Listen Troll, you're disingenuous with your debate and consistently wrong, move on if you're here to troll. We all know you can debate both sides of anything, but you're clearly on the losing side of this issue. I know people with 1000 mbps download and 35 mbps upload in their apartment, its about where you live and what's available there. Windstream and satellite are the only options where I am, I would have fiber if it was here, but its not. I understand the limitations and what consumes speed, it's that understanding that led me to try Viasat and their marketing as better. Nothing you could say changes the speed tested here with everything off, I switch and test windstream to be faster. This would be the end of the story if I didnt have way faster speeds last week.

Don't go into seclusion troll Steven, I see as of tonite 84  people (so far) voted that they like you, including me.  That's 84 to 1 that says you failed your qualification to become an official troll.  Better luck next time.

I've made no changes and I've used 50% of my monthly data, and my speeds have been way slower in the past few days. I figured it was online shopping and kids out of school for the holidays.

I don't think he's going to like what Exede tells him when he ask about switching to a business plan. Keep in mind, he wants to do his business as cheaply as possible.

Robert,

Please send your account data to us at ExedeListens@viasat.com.  It might be that part of your account is stuck in DAP, I'd like to see if I can correct that for ya!
