You can’t call a plan unlimited and put data caps on it. I can’t watch anything now that I’ve reached my data capped “unlimited” plan. I’ve got my TV set to the lowest quality picture and only get 3 words at a time before buffering for 30 seconds at least. 180 dollars a month for this crap! There are 2 other companies I can get where I live and neither of them have data caps on unlimited plan. Change the name of the plan because that’s not the definition of unlimited!

I have never seen any Viasat literature that suggests you will have unlimited speed. And the data is unlimited. The speed is reduced once past the data cap, but you can keep using data with no limit for the rest of the month. I think it is you who is challenged in regard to the definition of unlimited.

Kimberly, If you can get a true unlimited plan from a land based provider then it's you who screwed up by signing up with a satellite company.

Well I just found that out a few days ago. My family just moved an hour and 45 minutes from our old house, from the city to the country. So excuse me for being a “screw up”

Sorry Kimberly but you didn't mention that you just moved to the country. Trust me, I understand. I lived in a large city years ago with plenty of options and moved to a very rural area. It was a shock as well when I realized I was stuck on either dial up or satellite.

I would go with anything else you can get besides dial up , satellite internet is only a small step above dial up when it comes to internet in general , try verizons jetpack + the unlimited 65 a month plan + Mifi signal booster , It certainly cant be any worse than your Unlimited* plan your on now

While Viacarp has grasped the concept of congestion, he still fails to realize that throttling and prioritization are network congestion management practices. And here I thought he was making progress - oh well, he still fails to connect the dots.

Or, maybe he's simply hung up over the word prioritization - defined simply as changing priorities in a networking context ,which is why Viasat explicitly states prioritization behind other customers.... deprioritize isn't officially a word although commonly used and accepted as one.

Or maybe Bev's introduction of fixed capacity, supply and demand are much to handle at this time.

Or maybe it's the difference between driving out to a corn field and erecting a new cell tower vs launching a satellite into geostationary orbit to add capacity.

It's tough to tell with the well thought out responses he gives here. Just keep thinking it's "conjestion" Viacarp - wouldn't want you to hurt yourself and it's easier that way.

Who knows, maybe we can get in touch with Brian and have him zap some knowledge in up there. I mean our little ET was basically an apprentice under Alex, Brad and Diana for a long time. Brian knows everything about satellite internet. xD

IMHO, he's playing games.  I think he gets it, but acts like he doesn't as a form of amusement.

Old labs it’s not my fault their services have to be so complicated.

I agree and finally we agree on something, but that shouldn't dissuade you from attempting to understand the complexity of network management.

Outside of an unfortunate name selection, you actually started out with a reasonable post that you authored asking a simple question:

https://community.viasat.com/viasat/topics/how-does-conjestion-work

You received a couple of measured responses, failing to even respond, before switching over to ad hominem when jumping into conversations and threads like this one with one liners and insults. In response others jumped on  you, including myself - you got what you dished out in other words and it'll continue to escalate with that strategy. I can swap ad hominem with the best of 'em but I try to avoid throwing the first punch - you need to go to the video tape to determine who did once things turn into a hockey fight.

You might do better going back to that original topic and carrying on a reasonable conversation if really wanting to understand the complexity (and yes it is hard to grasp even for the pros). With the discussion spanning multiple disjointed conversations, it's even harder to grasp the complexity.

Will understanding the complexity make you feel any better about the reality of satellite internet? Probably not except to satisfy your curiosity why things work the way they do.
