Unlimited data slow down

I’m wondering what’s the point of the unlimited plan. I went one gb over the 150 “soft cap” and bow I can’t even stream a video. It’s going slower than when I didn’t have unlimited and I would go over the cap. I already tried resetting the modem and it didn’t help.

Yeah I even tried disconnecting or powering off everything I wasn’t using and it was struggling. I would hope it’s just from heavy traffic on the beam and not heavy throttling, especially with all the net neutrality stuff going on in the news right now.

I would have you call us. The Net Neutrality issue is a hot topic since a potential rollback is up for a vote in December. As far as that goes Viasat will comply with all Net Neutrality Laws including those in effect today.

I think in your case it's hopefully a busy beam and it was slow across the board but I think I would have you call us at 855-463-9333 so we can definitely pinpoint what's going on

It’s back to 11mbps which I assume isn’t normal for being over my “cap”

11 Mbps this time of the evening is about right for a moderately congested beam over the Priority limit. That's about half of full speed so, pretty good for lower priority at this hour.

Some heavily congested beams do well to see that off peak with priority data remaining.

Yeah I meant to say that I assume 11 was normal for over the priority level. Isn't was a autocorrect typo

Everyone is all oooh oooh about data caps and the unlimited plan.

I'm on a Liberty 12 plan and have had no problem using over 200 gb so far this month.

You are fortunate Stephen to not be on a congested beam. Your experience is not typical for users on beams that have a lot more users.

Bottom line: don't move :)

I think that is very likely to be related to a spike of people coming off of a busy holiday weekend like Veteran SatUser suggested. Today is also a very hot shopping day so if people aren't using their job's internet connection to shop they're probably at home doing it too. I would say keep an eye on it like say tomorrow for example and see if this is regular or if it improves since the past weekend. We are working on managing the traffic better but like actual car traffic that takes a lot of time and workarounds. But it will definitely see an improvement once ViaSat 2 goes online to split the workload.

How is it running post-peak hours? We may have a issue if it's still very slow during the day

It ran fine before I left for work so I didn’t think anything of it. But it’s back to being really slow now that I’m home from work. I assume peak hours are after 5pm to sometime overnight?

Yes. Especially in the east.

It was still running super slow when I got home tonight so I decided to do a speedtest and it’s not even running at 1mbps and I’m paying for 25mbps. It took me 5 minutes to download a 22mb app. That doesn’t seem like a prioritizing issue it seems like a throttling problem which I was told before I switched it wouldn’t be like this. I would’ve been better off keeping my liberty 150 plan since I’m getting basically no service once I git 150 anyway. If it’s still like this tomorrow that is a major issue in my opinion.

Your upload should never be that slow. With a device directly connected to the modem run a test with testmy.net downloading a 10+ MB file and see what you get.

Took me 2 tries because it stopped at 96% the first time.

That's bad. Very bad. Is that with a device directly connected to the modem? On your modem status page, do you see anything off? I would also contact customer service (on here) and have them take a look at your account.

Yeah that was directly connected not that it was much better than my WiFi speedtest results. It was working perfectly fine all weekend and then I hit 151gb and it just died. I tried rebooting the modem. I feel like less than 1mbps is more than just congestion

It’s just prioritization. You’re no longer a priority. Use all you want though. It’s unlimited.

I ran a test about 11:00pm on my beam.  I am under no data restriction and pulling 1.1Mbps.  So depending on your location, the 257Kbps is possible since you are now "at the back of the line".

Viasat offered unlimited.  It might be fine under "normal" usage conditions.  But now and in the later half of December, we are not going to be looking at "heavy" usage conditions.

Most people get home from work at the same time, after 5 pm.  Thats when congestion begins and it ends once Netflix and chill is over with for the night.
