Unexplained High Data Usage Following Outage

Hi All,

Has anyone else experienced unusually high Data Usage following the massive outage?

I was only a few days into my billing cycle when it occurred, and noted on Friday that I was already at 30% of my 10GB Limit (Exede Evolution - Web+Email 3-8am Free Zone).
This seemed a bit high, but no reason to panic.

On Saturday, we spent the day working outside (not using the internet) and in the middle of the afternoon, I received a text from Viasat that I was now at 70% of my data limit - OK, now I was "concerned"

When we came inside I double checked that all computers/tablets/phones were off and not using any data.

We settled in for the evening to watch TV (Satellite), and I received an email from Viasast around 9PM saying that I was at 100% of my data allowance - now I was beyond concerned.

Before I go crazy trying to interrogate Alexa (echo dot), my IP power outlets, Dish Hopper, etc., I thought I would check here to see if anyone else had unusual data usage in the last couple of days.

I have had Viasat for 6 years now, and I am reasonably experienced with data monitoring / rationing and the consumption caused by automatic updates, streaming video, etc. and so far I cannot identify any of these things as the source of my issue.

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

Data usage is nothing that a good quality wireless router would easily identify.

You said that all your devices were off. Were they actually turned off, or just sleeping?

The Dish Hopper cannot be turned off, it only goes to standby. That is the most likely culprit.

My data usage in the past week have been very normal, but others may respond with a report of unusual usage.

Thanks Steve,
I am in the process of an upgrade that will hopefully give me more refined data usage monitoring, but unfortunately that is not in place yet, so I have to track down things the hard way.
I just wanted to double check with the community first to see if there might have been some more widespread weird behavior.

Do a search on this forum for data usage solutions. i posted a lengthy thread a while back which tells you key things to do.
First thing to check is to make sure your smart devices have the auto-app updates turned off. It doesn't matter if you have done this in the past because some OS updates have been known to turn it BACK ON. Also if you have a laptop, make sure the wifi connection is set to metered.

Thanks for the tips.  I usually have the updates and smart devices under control, but it is possible that something slipped through.
Before I started with the troubleshooting, I wanted to check here to see if anyone else was experiencing similar unusual behavior.
I have already wasted 3 hours this week trying to figure out why my internet wasn't working before I checked the community and saw that outages were being reported all over the country.
Just didn't want a repeat.
Thanks again!

It's always a good policy, especially with Apple products, to check your setting after you do ANY iOS update OR carrier update. If nothing else it is super easy for folks to accidentally turn on iCloud.
