To those that have exceed bundled with Dish I was using every bit of data 5 days into a new cycle 15 gigs.of data! to me this is impossible for someone like me who does not download movies or music....I finally disconnected my hopper from the Internet now 6 days into a new cycle I've only used 3 % of my data so far to me this is proof that the hopper is a big problem when it comes to data usage I don't know if Direct TV''s Genie creates the same problem my suggestion is to disconnect you dish or direct TV from the Internet and save that presious expensive data for when you need it

Yes-it does!  I just learned this from a guy Direct sent out to fix a problem I was having with my satellite.  I mentioned that I hadn't figured out how to hook the internet to the Genie and he said I really wouldn't want to do it anyway, because it would chew up all of my data allowance in a hurry.

That is a good point and has been mentioned one other time I think.  They realized the on-demand content they wanted to watch was actually using their internet connection to download it.

I have Directv's Genie HR44 and it is connected to the internet via netgear wireless router. It works flawlessly and uses no additional data unless you download something. Unless you download a movie you will never no it's connected in regards to data usage. I have been very pleased with this combination for over a year now.

I also have an HR44.  I had mine connected to Internet temporarily, however I noticed it automatically downloading shows two ways.  Say you have a few shows recorded that they also have available on demand.  You watch the group and reach the end of the ones recorded, it will say something like next available show and have a five second count down which you can cancel if you see it in time.  After five seconds, it starts streaming the next episode from online.  Also, if you are flipping through channels to a new station or just turn on the receiver (receiver wasn't on the station and on saving the previous while), it says push "rewind" to start at the beginning, if that is accidentally bumped, say by an elderly person as I've had happened, again, automatically streams from the Internet.  After that, I disconnected mine.  At least that's what mine does.

Hello John, that is an excellent point to make in regards to DTV and Exede data usage. If you’re DTV has to download any type of movies or music, more than likely, your Exede data is being used for download.

Very true, Most apple devices by default are set to back up to the iCloud when charging and connected to WiFi.
