What is a torrent and will it reduce data downloads on Viasat?
Is it useful for downloading videos?
Does Viasat discourage torrent downloading?
What are the advantages of downloading a torrent versus regular downloading?
Thanks.

Torrenting is a type of peer-to-peer data sharing.

It will not reduce data usage.  All you are doing is downloading the same amount of data from multiple sources.  It will probably increase your usage, really, as most torrenting programs also automatically upload your torrents as you download new ones.

We don't encourage or discourage, though we suggest being very careful.  Make sure you have a very good antivirus program running if you want to torrent a lot.  You don't know where those files you downloaded have been!

Torrenting is known for being used to spread illegal stuff, pirated movies, programs, etc.  It can be used to download anything, but that's what it's most known for.  Those files can be tracked sometimes, and your service may be interrupted if we find a lot of pirated data being exchanged.
