Too much data being used!

Why is my modem constantly blinking the up light? It is using data when I'm not even at home. I never used over 5 gigs with Hughes Net but now I'm using over 12 gigs. Why? I haven't changed anything.

The constant blinking of your modem when you're not using the internet is just the normal chatter between the modem and satellite to maintain connection and does not count on your usage...think of it as the modem pinging the satellite asking "are you still there" and the satellite returning the ping request saying "yes, I'm still here.    ☺☺☺

This still shows up as data used. I'm on a wireless router and can completely un hook everything and the modem still used data.

Lloyd if you're looking at data usage that shows when you open the modem menu the modem-to-satellite chatter will show bits increasing but that data is not counted toward your usage,,in the early days of VS-1 many of us early customers challenged that and eventually proved it did not count unless our system actually sent or received data from the ground based servers through the satellite to our modem..

Well, I had Hughes Net for over two years and never used more than 5 gigs of data in a one month period. Now since starting with Viasat my monthly usage exceeds 12 gigs and then it slows down to a slower speed because the usage meter says I've used that much but I know I have not. I still have the same computer I had with Hughes and haven't changed any of my usage. I just don't think this is right.

The data usage as shown by my windows network adapter has always been in line with what ViaSat has shown my usage to be.  If it were me, I would be looking to see what changed on my end.  I would also be looking to see if some malware snuck into my system.

If your HughesNet was a slower speed then Viasat, you will use more data.  Faster download speed equals more data used because you can.

You are using more data now because the internet is more data intensive. I use to use 2 GB of data on my mobile device. Two years later I am using 12GB+
