The technician charged my wife 50.00 to dig the hole for the post that holds the dish. Is this a common practice?

Yes. That is not a Viasat expense. That is a contractor charge for manual labor beyond the normal install.

Many years ago, I insured i was home when both satellite TV and wild blue came to my home. I dug the hole, held the pole while the tech placed cement around it, dug the trench and pulled cable and secured it to the underside of my deck to my house. No charge for my "custom installation".  Basically, because i am always involved in everything that goes on out here, and i am a bit on the anal side.

You'll be happy it is on a pole if snow blocks your signal and when it is time to turn your equipment in.
