The attached image should explain the recent changes to Unlimited Silver.  It still isn't as good as Liberty 12 but the good folks at Viasat are working on making it better.

Should be obvious Viasat significantly overextended themselves with the 150GB "unlimited" plans last fall, and they didn't get the result they expected from the video downgrader.

Now it is also obvious Viasat-2 isnt delivering near what was expected after being in service for over 2 months.

The only thing that might save  the new plans if they are on VS-2 is the fact that they probably won't be congested!  So, even with less data, they might be usable.  But the new pricing  really makes them hard to swallow.  But, I guess that will help keep them from getting too congested!

I would agree with that. But when one guy pays $150 for gold and 100GB of priority data and the guy in the next zip code pays $200 for gold and 65GB of priority data, how can that fly? That is some whacked out marketing there. Paying more for less!

I guess it can fly because people don't have good alternatives.  And I agree that this marketing plan is evil marketing at it's worst!

That's better than my area. I pay 100/mo for Unlimited Silver. (150 GB Priority at 25 Mbps) Top plan available now is Liberty 50 12 Mbps for 100/month. OUCH!

I am sure you can't believe what you are seeing either Bev. Perhaps you need another sabbatical and I guess I need to take one now too!

Stephen though will stay on and shill for Liberty 12....wherever it is still available.

I am on Liberty 12 and used 185 GB of data last month. I didn't run out of my 12 gb priority data until the last two days of my billing cycle.

Liberty 12 is way better than any unlimited plan If you know how to manage your data.

I watched The Cosby Show and Matlock tonight without using a bit of my priority data.

Yea. We all know :).

Try watching a show made in this century, might find something you like! I watched an interesting show the other day where a grandson did a documentary on his grandfather (a pilot) who was in B52 crash that dumped 2 hydrogen bombs in western Maryland. They recovered them, but there have been other "Broken Arrows" including one bomb still missing somewhere in North Carolina and another bomb where 5 out of 6 safety devices failed. That one would have destroyed the North Carolina coast.

The stuff covered up during the Cold War!

That sounds pretty interesting. What was the name of It?

I do watch modern stuff once in a while. I've watched How I met your mother, lost, and the office. Not brand new shows but they are from this century.

Spoiler alert: Lost sucks bad. Domt waste your time watching the whole series.

I have heard that about Lost.

It's called "Buzz One Four" on Amazon. Also learned that B52's had major design flaws initially and the government knew about it but was slow to repair them. I mean what was the hurry, they were just carrying hydrogen bombs over us. That, and pilots were taking prescribed amphetamines to stay awake!

And if you really want to be scared, watched the documentary on nuclear bomb disposal. We don't have technology to destroy plutonium. We can make it, just can't get rid of it. So it's all stored in this place in Texas. I believe they said it will be 250,000 years before it will decay naturally. Joy!

NOW the Silver "Unlimited" Plan on the highly touted Viasat-2, only allows 60GB before "throttling" or prioritizing, as they call it!

The installer could not answer as to why this brand new satellite with supposedly low traffic yet and SO MUCH GREATER CAPACITY has a lower limit on the plan with the SAME name. Does not compute!

Isn't "Lost" one of the highest rated series of all time? I never watched it when it was airing but have thought about downloading and giving it a shot.

The first season was pretty good.  Eventually they got into some weird stuff that had nothing to do with their plane being crashed on the island.  It got really ridiculous.  I won't give anything away, other than warning you not to watch it.

I've heard some folks mention that it went off into a lot of sci-fi stuff, which I wouldn't mind since I'm a fan of the genre. Might give the first couple of season a shot just to check it out.

I watched every last episode of that show, even after it jumped the shark. I *still* kick myself for having stuck it out.

I did like the Daniel Faraday character, though. Excellent actor, that Jeremy Davies.

Paraphrasing my last comment in regard to the plans

These are the current available plans as they exist now. Keep in mind plans, pricing and availability varies by location and do tend to change over time.

For some these plans may not be attractive but you can stay on your current plan as you're not obligated to switch.

I know, Just disappointed if this is Viasat 2. 12MBPS and Liberty 50 at best. Not what we were lead to expect of Viasat 2.

I get that it has problems but, those were minimized so, we didn't know to lower our expectations of that bird.

At this point I feel like it's sit tight for a few more years and wait for Viasat 3 or maybe even 4 before anything really good comes along for my area at least.

Yes, my Unlimited Silver at 25 Mbps is pretty good except the video downgrade is forced. If I could do HD and not get video throttled until I used my 150GB then, it'd be a perfect plan.

Better than any other option in many areas, like mine. Up to 15 Mbps cable/dsl IF you live inside the city limits and, even that throttles to 24kbps after 1500 GB per month and off after 2000 GB used in a month.

Outside the city limits, some houses can get up to 24Kbps dial up. Some, like me can't even get that since the telco decided our road didn't have enough potential customers to be worth even servicing the old aluminum lines that exist out here.

Of course being that's AT&T and, they own DirecTV, they want us all to get that and Viasat Internet service - more $$ for them.

If they gave me the in the city service, I'd have phone, cable, internet and, cell all for 99.00 per month but nope, not out here. All of those combined cost me 700/month (Okay so that's 5 lines on my cell plan, DirecTv Premium and, Viasat Unlimited Silver plus Viasat Voice. Still the cost of rural living is EXPENSIVE if you want those simple luxuries that almost aren't luxuries any more.

Bev, you nailed it. Internet is really no longer a luxury; it's fast becoming a necessity for many. However, I don't think there's going to be a push for rural broadband connectivity like there was for rural electrification.

My internet is $110 bucks a month. My landline is $90. My mobile phone is $125 for 2 lines and only one with a smartphone. Connectivity, whether voice or data, is spendy for rural folks.

I didn't even count the XMRadio subscription so we can listen to something besides half static country music out here. LOL

Our cell is 4 smartphones and a tablet, all with unlimited everything so, that is a bit costly.

When we had landline service, it was 80/month and, didn't even include caller ID, let alone voice mail or any other features. When it rained, you could dial my number and maybe get me, or any one else that lives on this road - depends on which box got wet and where the water in the box ran.

I refused to pay the bill until it was repaired after a storm. It still isn't repaired and never will be.

My landline was crap too. Dumped it four years ago. No regrets.

SiriusXM is a must have to me. Directv, SiriusXM, and Viasat. All three combined allow me to live anywhere in the country with my entertainment needs.

Joint the club, a few months after I refused to pay for a non working line, they ended service out here and, told me I didn't have to pay that bill. Viasat Voice and DTV are fine for me.

True. More and more areas are not even providing landlines. It will take awhile, but old copper landlines will go the way of telegraph lines.

I just wish cellphone companies would do a better job of providing coverage in rural areas. I have to use a signal booster for mine and even then some days it's hit or miss.

Interesting email.

Faster speeds? The plans don't indicate it.

Unlimited data? In a lot of areas the priority data is less than what people already have.

More powerful Wi-Fi? I will buy that, but why would one upgrade to Viasat-2 just for that???? Get a better router if you want that.

The marketing department...

Even if the speeds are the same, one would think "up to 12 mbps" would be faster on Viasat 2 than it is on Viasat 1.

Mind boggling.  I'm still not sure what to think of Viasat 2.  Lets hope the insurance company forces them to attempt to redeploy the antennas, and that it works.

I don't think that will happen. I think that ship has sailed. And of course, the spots beams then ended up in some areas where they weren't needed, and other areas where they were badly needed didn't get them.

To quote Andy, a lot of the country is getting the scraps.

Boy, ain't that the truth! 12Mbs on a good day (I'm pulling 1.3Mbs at the moment).

But the ad also needs to highlight that that 12Mbs is only attainable on sunny days. On rainy (or particularly cloudy) days, that speed drops to 0Mbs since my brand new 802.11n modem spends most of its time looking for a signal while I'm having to tether to my cellphone to get any work done. I guess that's still (technically speaking) "up to" 25Mbs though, so kudos to Viasat for their creative approach to truth in advertising.

Another nice touch is that even though Viasat loves to say "There is never a fee to change your Viasat internet plan," they don't mention that, at least when trying to downgrade Unlimited Silver 25 to Unlimited Bronze 12 (so that I might actually only have to pay for the bandwidth I'm getting), they'll require a NEW 24-month contract, even after my three years of service. Again, that's not technically a fee but yeah, some lube would be a nice touch.

Also, just noticed that the Silver 25 plan description now reads "On the Unlimited Silver 25 service plan, after 60 GB of data usage, we may prioritize your data behind other customers during network congestion." When I switched to Silver 25, that read "150 GB," not "60 GB." This just keeps getting better and better.

Ah well, at least after switching from Generation 5 to Unlimited Silver 25 at the first of the year, I was finally happy with the value of the service... until I started using it.

Well, after my Exede 5 beam being closed all but a couple/handful or so months since '12, new plans are available.  ...yay...! I think...?  They had the Liberty plans for a few days, starting at $80.  Now, Unlimited Bronze 12 at $110 is the cheapest plan (I include the lease fee, because it's what you actually pay for the service).  Nice option for those who have been waiting for something other than Hughesnet.  Sooo, glad I have my regional cell carrier (hopefully it keeps working...), I just wish more of my neighbors could get a cell signal.  They already said no way they were paying $80....

I had been around Direcway/whatever since about '97, but never got that because it still used dialup, which disconnected constantly, plus it was too expensive at the time.  When I got Wildblue in '06, it was exciting, it worked great coming from dialup that disconnected constantly.  I think it was about '08 or so, they changed traffic shaping, no longer fast (still the 0.5 meg, but everything loaded slower), pings nearly doubled to over 1300ms, usage added up faster on the meter for some reason doing the same things (you could look at the graph and see when they "flipped the switch", yes there was a usage history graph).  Exede launched around '12, with a lower cap than was available all those years before, about 25% lower on all plans.  Lots of complaining on the other forum, they finally upped the base plan to 10GB, and added the free zone.  So, customer feedback does sort of work.
