Yes it is. I am part of the problem too. We got our 9 year old daughter a new Tablet and a Nintendo Switch, an my husband got me a shiny new, and faster laptop. Time to crank these devices up and have them update their operating systems.

Have a Merry Christmas.

Just did another speed test and clocked in at 7.86 mbps.  Looks like I might get lucky and drop to 1 mbps by the end of today.

I don't usually do very many speed tests unless I see things are loading slowly. Earlier today things were downloading well, but now at almost noon, it is getting slow. Just checked testmy.net and it is down to 2.3 Mbps. I am on a 12 Mbps plan, so Christmas devices are up and running now.

Old Labs, not to worry about any slow downs because of priority data running out for a while. I have the Freedom 150 GB plan, and so far we have only used 45 GB, with renewal coming January 12th. I always keep my eye on our usage, a we approach the limit, I will make sure the family uses less data, or they will be slowed way down.

The grandfathered plans of Freedom and Liberty.  How many people gave those up for the promise of "unlimited" data and wish they still had their old plans?

I am sure there are many people who gave up those great plans and jumped on the over hyped "unlimited" plans. I never considered switching, and I now know that was the right thing to do. Knowing the limitations of satellite internet, I just could not see those new plans working out very well.

Ahhh.  Stephen doing his normal speed shilling.  It is 8:30am.  Most people are still working on presents or breakfast or something other than the internet.

So I am 2.4Mbps at 11:30am.  Not bad, but I expect speeds to get worse from there.  Not complaining, but not giving praise either.

I might be an unpaid Viasat shill on some things, but I don't come on here making posts bragging about my speeds all the time :)

Never been a fan.

But I need to do a X-COM 2 DLC Download.  31GB and my data just reset Saturday.

Alas I have no free zone, nor will I fall for the claims of "unlimited" data which is not really unlimited because once you go over your priority data all bets are off.

Gave the free zone up a year ago and no longer available.  There are times I miss it!

I kicked off a huge download this morning and when I got home, my priority data was all used up.

No worries, the Liberty Pass kicked in and my current speed is 6.59 mbps. The Liberty Pass is advertised as up to 5 mbps.

When 5pm arrives my speed should drop to 256 kbps until midnight which is perfectly acceptable given the plan I am on.

Shh Veteran! Don't tell my BF1 team I do just that xD. Yep 8PM, used 200+ GB on a 150 GB Priority plan and, playing for a Twitch live stream. Oo Oo did I break the rules again? :P Oh well, seems to be a bad habit of mine between BF1 and a few other games I like to demo what's possible with satellite, I seem to do that now and then.

Now would I attempt to stream a movie and game and upload my stream all at the same time while out of priority data? Not on your life - I don't mind being teased for having high ping but, I'm not about to become a serious laughing stock for my stream team.

Remember, on an unlimited Silver plan, regardless of overall connection speed, video is going to be at 1 Mbps, unless the overall is slower so, if I have 3 Mbps because I got deprioritized, that's still 2 Mbps for game data to load and, that's plenty.

I wouldn't even need a free Library plan, I would just take the magic beam Stephen is on!

Apparently there are beams out there that are even more magical than mine. One of the shills was reporting 3 mbps during prime time while on the Liberty Pass. I never see those speeds in the evening after using up my priority data.

Depending on time of day, my speeds are from 3-5 Mbps down, to 35-45 down ( night owls time ).
I signed for the Bronze plan, it is doing fine for us, we don't watch TV via the internet, we have DishTV for that.

I haven't experienced much slowdown at all this holiday season compared to previous years. Maybe some of the load has been lessened on Viasat 1? I'm off work this upcoming weekend so I plan on doing some heavy internet use the next 4 days to see what kind of performance I get.

This doesn’t make any sense. I’ve used up my priority data and my speed is over 3 mbps on the Liberty Pass during primetime. I’ve never seen speeds this high in the evening unless I have priority data left.

Don't know how it is in your area or state but there has been a bunch of cell towers put up here over the summer and fall. Might be a lot of Viasat customers jumping ship cause of this? Or is it Viasat 2  taking the load off of Viasat 1? All I know is since July Viasat has been much better than it has in the past, with speeds staying around 3mbps during prime time and 17mbps or more during the day on Liberty pass is just amazing. I'm in the mountains of SW Virginia on a beam that used to be so congested even with priority data I never seen speeds I get now.

I'm in the mountains of NW North Carolina and to my knowledge there haven't been any new cell towers put up in a while. My guess is that my beam isn't as congested as in previous years and that's why I haven't experienced the holiday slowdown.

Well, I guess it couldn't last as the holiday slowdown has finally hit me. Pages take forever to load. Even this forum took nearly a minute just to finish loading. Guess it's time to do something else since my internet is pretty much unusable right now.

I rebooted my modem and router and now I'm getting around 10Mbps. Looks like the problem wasn't congestion after all.

This has to be some sort of glitch. If Viasat doesn’t fix this, then Liberty 12 is going to end up being better than Platinum Unlimited.

This has been going on since June or July for me, I think the beams are not congested like they have been in the past tbh. Back in early 2017 last year even with priority data I would be at .025mbps or worse. Speeds continue to get better as time goes on to. Back in the early part of 2018 speeds was around 4mbps during the day and as time past they got better and better. Now during the day I get 18 to 20mbps on a 12mbps plan. Is it a glitch or just not as many people on our beams as before? With the speeds I get I say Viasat 2 has taken the load off of Viasat 1 or Viasat lost lots of customers. Something major has happened over the last year there is no denying that. When I say it started happening in July I mean with the Liberty pass having good speeds during peak hours.

I keep my downgrader off at all times as of late, back in the day I used it when I was on the 50gb plan and speeds was slow. I was on the 150gb unlimited plan not to long ago and tried it out but man that plan was horrible to stream content on. Then I switched to the Liberty 50 plan and never used all my data since I used the free time to record so I went to the Liberty 12 after a couple of months. Best plan I have been on is Liberty 12 And it is cheap to compared to the other plans.

I keep the downgrader turned on. I’m seriously thinking of turning it off if I continue to get speeds above 1 mbps during primetime on the Liberty Pass.

My priority data reset on the fourth. I’ve managed to use up my 12gb of priority data and am now on the Liberty Pass.

Unfortunately this means my speeds are reduced to up to 5 mbps.

I'm on my Linux laptop right now, using 2.4g.... slower than molasses it seems....
So, I  went to my office computer, a Win7 Pro PC, it has the Windows Desktop Speedtest.net app on it,
and it also is using a Cat-5 cable direct to the ViaSat modem.
at 7:30 pm CST, I must have been the only one using the beam to Oologah, OK tonight,
it peaked out at 69Mps down, and 5.01 up.

AZgl1800,

That Speedtest desktop app is sketchy, at best.  That's not to say that it can't be accurate, but only that it can be very inaccurate, and far too often.

Site testing gives the most accurate results, and more often.

I agree, when it was first shown to me, it was "used to prove how fast the ViaSat is".
As I have been a Comm Tech since 1958, working in the industry, when a "test tool" gives results and order of magnitude better than other commonly used tools, I tend to be very skeptic as to its' reliability/accuracy.

One thing it does do, is it consistently reports speeds that are more than twice what other common speed test sites do... in fact, it reports speed test results that are on average 2.5 times faster than the SpeedTest.net website does.

IMO, it is using a bit of skulduggery to get those results, like channeling direct to their own servers somehow...

I feel that it is communication directly with the LAN adapter, by not using other intervening software ( browsers ).

Here is the SpeedTest History for me over the last few weeks.  Depends on the Time of Day / Network Congestion.

I like this History log, gives an overall view of connection speed.
