Sudden increase in supposed data use.

Have been using Exede for roughly 5 years. Recently we have been getting close to our limit on the 18gb liberty plan. Just before the end of last months billing period I decided to go ahead and upgrade to the 30gb plan. All of a sudden 2 days into the new cycle and I get a notice that we are on Liberty pass!!! 30g gone in 2 days? Spent a couple hours wasting my time with tech on Friday afternoon. All they want to say is that I used that much data. According to their graphs our usage spiked about the time of the upgrade and ran 24 hours per day and continued even after the system went into liberty pass. No change on my end since prior to upgrade. Tech can't or won't explain what could be doing this. I have just unplugged the modem since Friday and only plug it in if I have to get on the internet to check email.

Same thing happened to me. Last month, according to Exede, I used 30gb in 4 days. When I called the tech said I was on my phone on the internet for 24 hours. Please, I am 61 years old, had just had open heart surgery and at that time couldn't even stay awake for 2 hours much less 24. The tech said that he would start a ticket and have it checked on but guess what, I never heard anything else about it and have now used all of my data for this month and still have 13 days to go in this month. I am only on the computer about an hour and a half a day. I do not stream movies or t.v. If there was a better company for me to change to, I would do it in a heart beat, but the only other one out there for someone in a rural area is no better.

Same thing happened to us. We have used Exede/wildblue since we moved to the country 7 years ago, on a 5GB plan.  Only once in that time did we ever exceed the data limit and I admit to downloading several large files then. We don't stream TV or movies. I use the internet to keep up with Continuing Medical Education mainly.  Around Christmas we got a notification that we had exceeded our limit and in January 24 hours after we renewed our monthly subscription, the 5 GB were gone! I contacted the techs and all they wanted to do was sell me more time. No help! They told me to download an app that could more accurately tell when the data was used. I did so and found it was used during times that we weren't on line or even home and our computers were off. They only said "you used the data. I certainly won't recommend Exede to anyone. We now disconnect the modem when we are not on line.

You would be much better served by leaving the Modem powered up but disconnecting the Ethernet cable between your router and the modem.

Doing so will 100% prevent anything on your network connecting and using data but at the same time allows to modem to maintain sync with the gateway.

As to "off", I can think of at least three different types  of "off".

I recently added my Wife's iPad to my 2.4 GHZ network. Charged it up and left it ... black screen.

My router logs show that thing connected ... never really stopping at all .... in the this entire 24 hour period.
