Steam, Battle.net, overall dissapointment with basic functionality and blocking of sites...

Sites like Steam and Battle.net are being blocked instead of throttled. While in other official posts from Exede representatives claim "steam is a gaming site" that is only partially true. store.steampowered.com is also a digital SHOPPING site, so even if you want to go and purchase a game to download later.... you are SOL. It's also a site where you can browse the news and patch releases for games and participate in their community. Will this ridiculous policy ever change??

Hello Trevor, We do not block any sites. If you are having trouble accessing these sites while throttled, it may have to do with the speed restriction. Some sites require a certain speed in order to access them.

Ok you say you don't see the need for the data caps then clearly you don't understand satellite internet. ViaSat has some 650k customers in the US all trying to get online through one satellite that can only handle 140Gbps so with out data caps users would be streaming music, videos, downloading updates or random large files all day. So if you even take half of their customers and say they would be doing that if they didn't have the data caps the system would be overloaded and you would be on dial up speeds at best if you can even get connected.

there speeds to get connected even now take a few seconds, I do not use exede for the speed, I use it because it is internet. There speed is already pretty sucky in the ping department and dial up speeds would not be much worse. Also I do not know where you are getting this 140Gbps because that is pretty terrrible if Via Sat, a huge company, can only have a sucky satellite for their users. I cannot believe a company like this rips people off for a living, adds data caps, and does not even have that great of an infrastructure.

Johnlompa, the ping is just a part of using satellite internet. The satellite is 22,000 miles above Earth, so the signal must travel roughly 88,000 miles for you to get a response to your request. That is about 730 milliseconds, that is fixed by the speed of light.

ViaSat 1 is not a cheap satellite, it is currently the most powerful one in service, and cost more than a half a billion dollars to get in service.

If you want unlimited data and high speeds, you need to go to land based service. Even many of the land based services are placing data limits, although much higher, but still capped if you become a big user of data.

You truly don't understand how satellite internet works. That so called crappy bird in the sky is the most advanced one out there.

What happens, from my understanding, is that if you're in restricted mode, with streaming blocked, these gaming sites just won't work well regardless of the function you're trying to use.

Yes, I understand this as I have experienced it first hand. This makes things rather difficult when trying to post comments or send messages via soundcloud to bands to offer production opportunities and the site just won't load. I can understand throttling, but there has to be a better way to throttle without destroying functionality. Even when I was using virgin mobile 3g (throttled after 2.5gb) in the throttled speeds I could still get steam, soundcloud, and mmo games to play. The speed was around 70kbs max! Is there anything being planned to change this policy? Shall I be doomed to roam the web at a snails pace with random sites failing to load because they have streaming elements?

Trevor, as both Alex and Amber told you, there is not a "policy" that exede controls.  Take the slow speeds, add to that the 1 second latency inherent in satellite communications, while DAP'd or not, and the site times out on you.  Only the site in question can change their settings, nothing exede can do will fix that (other than eliminating DAP, which, sure ain't gonna happen).

As counter intuitive as it may sound, slightly slowing things down even further by using VPN is reported to alleviate the conditions described when dapped. There are some free (and not so free) VPN services available and a reviews of some are available at:

http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2390381,00.asp

The problem is not so much related to speed, but the private nature of VPN appears to work around it. You wouldn't want to always use VPN (unless really concerned about privacy) but if unable to access while dapped.

ok, so answer me this exede guru's.  i have a game through steam called dungeon defenders 2, which plays through a website called www.playverse.com.  i can play the game anywhere but at my home.  even during the open times after midnight i can't play it.  i can play every other steam game i own but this one.  i tried pinging the playverse tonight and it just timed out, i realize some sites block pinging.  so i ask, is playverse a site that is blocked?  it doesn't make any sense to me why the only place i can't play this game is at my own home, when every other game works.

I am on Exede and have no trouble getting on the site. Is your router not allowing you to get on the site?

hey steve, i can also get to www.playverse.com login, though i don't have an actual playverse login.  i'm no computer expert but i believe DD2 plays through the playverse website.  i don't believe my router is blocking the website (its less than a year old), i can't believe a router would automatically block websites right out of the box, don't know that for sure.  here is what happens, you launch DD2 from steam or desktop icon, a window appears which should have a PLAY button in the lower left corner but at home its not there.  when i take my laptop to work, the PLAY button appears and i can play just fine. go back home and its gone. very frustrating.

Vern, I suggest you send an email to the Exede moderators at exedelistens@viasat.com and have them take a look at what is happening. Include your proble, and your account Exede information since they cannot determine that information from your profile on this forum. These folks are very good at what they do, and you will get so much quicker and better service than if you call CSD or use the Exede.com website for help.

Good luck in getting this resolved so you can get back to gaming.

Steve

Yeah, they always claim their not Blocking sites like Steam, XBOX, and PS3, but if you use a proxy, those sites load up as fast as normal! They even start messing with Amazon.com a few months ago. The store won't load any pictures now in DAP mode, (all of a sudden)! And just found out today, their Blocking Steam Community now, REALLY!!

What's Next, eBay? :(
